Imagine, for a moment, that you’re an ex-SAF regular who wakes up to another day of lazing around because you were retrenched due to Covid-19.

Then, a well-meaning friend forwards you a message from Whatsapp:

Well-meaning friend (WMF): Hey! You’re looking for a job, aren’t you? I’ve got a lobang for you.

Ex-SAF regular (Ex-R): Jinjja?

WMF: Yeah! N it’s from your ex-employer, Mindef.

Ex-R: Oh?

WMF: MINDEF HIRING DORM MANAGERS, PAYING $5.5K A MONTH!

WMF: … Hello?

Ex-R: *Logging onto the laptop to apply*

WMF: Uh… *POFMA crashes into room and arrests him for spreading fake news*

Ex-R: *Clicks <send>* Done! Hey, you there?

Yup, that’s the gist.

Reader Bao: You think you’re funny.

Uh, thanks-

Reader Bao: You’re not.

…Moving on.

Mindef Warns S’poreans About Fake Recruitment Message For Ex-Regulars

Just yesterday, Mindef took to their Facebook page to warn people about a fake recruitment message currently going around WhatsApp.

Here’s what the message says:

Hello, friends, please help to spread to those who want to contribute:

If you have anyone who is interested

Mindef is looking for ex WOSPEC to help in their joint task force for the fw dorm management. If anyone is able and willing can contact <censored>@mindef.gov.sg.

Just to brief what is the job all about.

A few days ago, Singapore has turned Singapore Expo into an interim hospital to house confirmed Covid patients with mild symptoms. Now they need to hire operation support to assist in the daily matters in the interim hospital.

There are concerns on potential transmitting cases if employee travels to & fro from home to work hence lodging (optional) can be provided upon request.

But that’s not the best part.

The best part is this: the pay will be up to $5,500 because it’s a “high risk role”.

Email addresses were provided for interested candidates to send their resume and information to.

Maybe not.

Mindef Says There’s Recruitment Going On But It’s Not Through WhatsApp

Mindef has clarified that they are hiring ex-SAF regulars to support the Inter-agency task force on foreign worker dormitory management.

Which means the job exists.

The recruitment message is fake.

They emphasised that messages which ask for personal details are fake and ask that people (e.g. the well-meaning friend above) not spread them around without verifying whether it’s real or fake.

For genuine openings for former Regulars, they say, they will not ask for personal details like gender, race, age, citizenship (??? if you ex-Regular you confirm is Singaporean mah) or more.
