Recently, you may have heard of our “fish-selling-brother” Wang Lei’s special trip to Paris.

Yup, the one that he sold over S$1 million worth of Gucci products in a two-hour live stream.

But he didn’t stop there.

Wang also posted clips of himself dancing and singing funeral songs while in front of the Eiffel Tower. He also mingled around with the locals.

Next thing you know, he was seen in a video teaching two men several Hokkien phrases.

He taught them the phrase “Heng Ong Huat”, which means good luck and prosperity.

The rest of them were profanities, so let’s not dive there.

After netizens reviewed the video, some had mixed opinions.

Some netizens think Wang Lei disgraced Singapore

On Monday (27 Dec), an article by Chinese newspaper Zaobao said that some netizens were taken aback by the “cultural exchange”.

They also quoted a reader who showed dissatisfaction towards his “rude attitude” in Paris.

To be fair, he is in fact known for his profanity-spewing persona though…

Wang Lei claps back at haters

An angry Wang Lei clapped back at haters who disapproved of his behavior while in Paris, and the live video was re-uploaded by TikTokers.

Speaking in Mandarin, Wang said that it was his business to teach vulgarities to ang mohs and does not concern other Singaporeans.

He also cited that if others were to think he’s sia suay (Hokkien for an embarrassment) to Singapore, they can choose not to watch it.

Upset that some local media outlets have “betrayed” him

Some may say that there is no such thing as bad publicity. After all, “bad publicity is still publicity”.

Well, maybe not to Wang Lei.

Certain local media outlets have quoted some netizens’ negative impressions towards Wang Lei and the incident. Regarding that, Wang then accused those media outlets of “betraying” him as they portrayed him in a bad light.

He also claimed that media outlets did not spotlight enough attention on the good that he has done in the past.

For example, when Malaysia had a bad flooding experience last month, Wang Lei came forth to raise funds for victims. In total, he raised approximately over S$194,000 in donations.

He then said, “Which celebrity in Singapore has stood up to be a voice for those in need of help from the floods in Malaysia? When I raised over 600,000 ringgit in donations, did I sia suay Singapore?”
