As Singapore combats with a sudden spike in local Covid-19 cases, several measures have been implemented atop those already in place during the first Circuit Breaker edition. These include:
- Closing down bubble tea stores
- Closing down hairdressing salons and barber shops
- Closing down just about any specialised store that predominantly retails ‘fattening’ stuff
It might be the CB period, but it seems that the government’s still very insistent on making it a decidedly healthy one, or at least one that’s easier on our waistlines.
But of course, decided measures aren’t limited to mere TAF Club restrictions. In other news, the government has also turned to high-traffic areas…
Where customers might be implored to go through contact tracing if necessary.
20 High-Traffic Supermarkets Might Take Down Your Contact Details When You Visit Them
As the concept of window-shopping withers away in the face of the almighty CB, avid shoppers have been reduced to browsing supermarkets and their many stocks and shelves, in a bid to relieve some of that window-shopping itch.
“What’s more, there are no consequences, you know?” CovidFan2020 said with a bright smile. “Just casual window shopping and coughing on the occasional bystander as a joke. Dope.”
But alas, this particular notion will no longer be available as additional measures edge their way into the Circuit Breaker.
Apart from a new NRIC-based entry system set up in four high-traffic wet markets, the government has also implored 20 high-traffic supermarkets to facilitate contact tracing if doable.
The specified 20 supermarkets are as follows:
- FairPrice Xtra @ AMK Hub
- FairPrice Finest @ Bukit Panjang Plaza
- Cold Storage @ Causeway Point
- FairPrice Finest @ Clementi Mall
- Cold Storage @ Compass One
- Cold Storage @ Great World City
- FairPrice Xtra @ Hillion Mall
- FairPrice @ Jurong Point
- Cold Storage / FairPrice Xtra @ NEX
- Cold Storage / Fairprice @ Northpoint City
- Cold Storage @ Parkway Parade
- Fairprice Finest @ Seletar Mall
- Fairprice @ Tampines Mall
- FairPrice Finest @ Tiong Bahru Plaza
- FairPrice Finest @ Waterway Point
- Fairprice @ Yew Tee Point
- Sheng Siong Fernvale Link (BLK 417)
- Sheng Siong Jurong West Ave 5
- Sheng Siong Elias Mall
- Giant Hypermart Tampines
According to the MTI press release on Tuesday (21 April), the branches have been encouraged to take note of shoppers’ information to facilitate contact tracing if possible.
Additionally, measures like temperature screening and jotting down of personal particulars will also commence at popular malls and supermarkets from 22 April 2020.
No More Family Outings
In light of the recent circumstances, you might have been forgiven for bringing your entire family of 11 to the nearby supermarket, in a bid to encourage some quality bonding time as well as get extra pairs of hands to manhandle all those 10KG sacks of rice.
But surprise, surprise;
The government is no longer tolerating that.
In addition to all the aforementioned measures, supermarkets have also been advised to encourage shoppers to practice solo trips, as family outings at supermarkets are not exactly ideal in light of everything that has happened recently.
Nope, not ideal at all.
Plus, supermarkets are also encouraged to cater specific opening hours to the vulnerable (like the elderly, disabled and pregnant), and market some of their products elsewhere in the mall to divert crowds.

It’s A Fight To The Death
The new measures come after a spike in local infection cases: foreign workers living in dormitories tested positive in entire batches, and the trend doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon.
In the wake of such an unfortunate event, the government has pulled out all the stops in order to prohibit unnecessary crowding, and the rest is really up to the masses.
Stay home, stay safe, they plead.
Well, I reckon we should jolly well do that, if not for the government then for the country, us and our general happiness.
