347 New Covid-19 Cases Reported Today (13 Jun); 5 Cases In The Community

On 12 Jun, 463 new Covid-19 cases were reported, with 18 cases in the community.

Thankfully (for my very weak heart), the numbers today seems more reassuring.

On 13 Jun, as of 12pm, the Ministry of Health (MOH) reports 347 new Covid-19 cases, including 5 cases in the community.

Two are Singaporeans/PRs while the remaining 3 are work pass holders.

12 Jun: Details On The 18 Cases In The Community

Six were Singaporean men working at the dormitories and picked up by MOH’s proactive screening.

One community case is a 22-year-old Singaporean woman who is unlinked to previous cases.

There was only 1 PR who tested positive yesterday. He is a 40-year-old man who is a close contact of a previous case and was already serving quarantine orders.

For the remaining 10 community cases, two are work pass holders while the remaining 8 are on work permits.

Three were detected due to proactive screening by MOH at foreign dormitories, two were swabbed as part of MOH’s monitoring of essential services and the five other cases were close contacts of previous cases and already on quarantine.

Further tests showed that 4 of the 18 cases were infected some time ago and were no longer infectious.

Results are pending for the remaining cases.

Always Wear Your Mask When Outside

A new study in the US showed that wearing masks is more effective at curbing Covid-19 transmission than social distancing measures.

Mask-wearing rules were implemented in northern Italy on 6 Apr 2020.

It was found that by doing so, the number of infections was significantly reduced by over 78,000.

In New York City, after mask-wearing was made compulsory on 16 Apr, the number of infections was reduced by over 66,000 from Apr 16 to 9 May.

While the rest of America sees its daily infections rising, New York City saw its infection rate dropped by 3% daily.

It was noted in the study that before the mask-wearing regulations came into effect, both northern Italy and New York City had all the quarantine, self-isolation and social-distancing measures in place.

Better Than Social-Distancing

The researchers in the study also noted that social-distancing measures are great for preventing direct contact transmission.

However, with masks, people are blocked from inhaling (and exhaling) viral-loaded aerosols.

The findings seem to indicate that “airborne transmission for Covid-19 seems to be the current dominant transmission route”.

If the study proves to be accurate, this means that as long as everyone does their part and keeps their masks on (unlike Sun Plaza Lady no. 2), we have a really good chance of entering Phase 2.
