When you’re unsatisfied with the food you’ve purchased, it’s not unusual to ask for a refund or a free new meal.
Like when you find a cockroach in your Bak Chor Mee or poop in your pig intestines, you’d rightly be outraged and demand to see the manager or stall owner so you can ask for a refund.
But no unsavoury dining experience can compare to that of this customer, who asked for a refund because… he wasn’t served enough chilli sauce.
Customer Allegedly Asked for Refund from Hawker As There Wasn’t Enough Chilli Sauce
Eng Kee Chicken Wings, a famous chicken wing stall at a hawker centre in Commonwealth Dr, has a gripe with one of its customers.
On Friday (28 March), the chicken wing stall shared details of a customer’s complaint in a post on Facebook.
Here’s what the post says:
“Just because customer feels that we didn’t packed (sic) enough chilli sauce, want us to deliver chilli sauce for her or refund. We can’t afford to deliver so we did a full refund. As you know la, we hawkers don’t earn a lot. Especially this cirtical (sic) period.
Purpose of this post is please be considerate and be kind to locally owned hawkers/shops & etc.
We are #SGUNITED!”
Yes, one customer complained to a food stall about a lack of chill sauce after an online delivery.
But he didn’t just complain to vent his anger out on them; he actually demanded a full refund.
I mean if he ordered a giant bowl of chilli sauce, I’d understand, but he ordered chicken wings.
As Eng Kee says in their post, they could not afford to deliver, so they did the unthinkable: they actually gave in to this customer’s unreasonable request.
Here’s Your Refund, Jerk
Eng Kee posted a picture of the refund payment, showing the amount paid but blurring out the customer’s name.
$46? Either this customer has a huge family or a large stomach.
They ended the post pleading with customers to be more “considerate and be kind to locally owned hawkers/shops”, because they “don’t earn a lot”, especially during this Covid-19 pandemic.
If you feel an unholy amount of anger towards the customer and sympathy for Eng Kee, you’re not alone.
Netizen reaction
It’s not an understatement to say that netizens were really pissed with this customer.
Theory – It Was Planned All Along
Now, one has to ask: would a regular human really ask for a full refund because they didn’t receive enough chilli sauce for their chicken wings?
As one netizen pointed out, food stalls and restaurants are at the customer’s mercy these days with the advent of social media; all it takes is one post and their business suffers immensely.
It’s possible that this customer planned this all along, knowing that Eng Kee would be forced to pay a refund to avoid damaging their reputation.
So, in the end, the happy customer received $46 worth of chicken wings for free, which he probably dipped in the 60 bottles of chilli sauce he bought after Malaysia announced its lockdown.
It’s sad that we have people like this amongst us, who, even in the toughest of times, can’t seem to muster up a single ounce of sympathy.
