Fire Led to Several Restaurants’ Closure at Shaw Centre on First Day When People Can Dine In Group of 5

22 Nov 2021 was supposed to be a happy day for restaurants.

This is the first day where customers might start flocking in again after dining restrictions eased for vaccinated individuals.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for restaurants located in Shaw Centre.

On the morning of 22 Nov 2021, a fire broke out at Shaw Centre.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the fire at around 10:15am.

About 200 individuals self-evacuated from the premises.

Thankfully, there were no injuries reported and the fire was put out by a water sprinkler system and one water jet.

The Cause & Closure Of Multiple F&B Outlets

According to SCDF, the fire “involved an electrical circuit box in a unit” on level two.

Meanwhile, the Les Amis Group, which owns several restaurants in the building, said the fire broke out at their La Taperia restaurant.

A spokesperson for the company said that they are working closely with the SCDF.

The situation is still under investigation, the spokesperson said.

For the safety of customers and staff, the Les Amis Group also decided to close their other concepts within the mall for the day.

This includes:

  • Bistro Du Vin
  • La Strada
  • And Tarte by Cheryl Koh

“For the safety of all guests and staff, all concepts at Shaw Centre will be temporarily closed today till the investigations have been fully conducted.

“We will do our best to offer them alternatives at our other concepts outside of Shaw Centre, if appropriate.”

The spokesperson added that La Taperia was almost fully-booked for lunch.

Aftermath

At about 12pm, water could still be seen dripping from the ceiling on the ground floor.

The retail side of the building was taped up and building staff was spotted turning shoppers away, asking them to enter the mall from the other entrance.

A staff member of a restaurant unrelated to the Les Amis Group told The Straits Times that there wasn’t much panic in the evacuation.

When they walked down the stairs, they could see dark, heavy smoke coming out of the second floor.

When they reached the exterior of the building, he saw many people just standing around and waiting.
