Back on 13 Jan 2023, a GetGo car ran a red light and rammed into a public bus service 117 at high speed.
This happened at the junction of Yishun Avenue 2 and Yishun Central.
Upon impact, the front of the GetGo car, a black SsangYong Tivoli, crushed while the bus jolted.
The GetGo vehicle driver and six bus passengers were sent to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. Another bus passenger was injured but wasn’t conveyed to the hospital.
Unfortunately, the GetGo car driver did not survive the incident.
Then, it was said that investigations were ongoing. Well, more information has been revealed about the accident on 10 July 2023.
GetGo Driver Who Died in Viral Yishun Accident Had Taken Drugs
According to the autopsy, the GetGo vehicle driver, 31-year-old Mr Alvin Wong Mun Loong, had traces of drugs in his system at the time of accident.
Along with painkillers and sedatives, traces of ecstasy, methamphetamine and amphetamine were found in his body.
A combination of these drugs could have caused cognitive impairment, leading to his inability to drive safely.
Police officers also found drug apparatus in the vehicle.
There were also no tire skid marks to show that the vehicle was slowing down at the junction.
A Known Drug Addict
Apparently, Mr Wong was a known drug addict.
He was previously charged for drug offences and was released from a 12-month stint at the Drug Rehabilitation Centre (DRC) on 16 Mar 2022.
He was then placed on a 16-month drug supervision and had to report to Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) for urine tests.
He went for the tests until November 2022, then stopped turning up and was “on the run” from CNB, according to his wife.
Mr Wong and his wife were no longer staying together since December 2022.
Days before the accident, his wife said Mr Wong had reached out via Instagram to apologise “for his shortcomings”.
However, he did not have suicidal thoughts or any medical condition except for asthma, she said.
Another baffling fact in the case was that Mr Wong did not have a valid license.
According to his wife, he had started learning driving in August 2022 but did not have a valid license yet.
So how did he manage to rent a GetGo car?
While not much information is shed on the process, it was made known that Mr Wong had used a stranger’s information to successfully rent the vehicle.
