Jealousy kills.
It’s perfectly normal to fall in love with someone and be in a loving relationship with them. However, sometimes, the love may become excessive and when you are unable to control your anger in certain situations, you may lose all rationality and do things that your rational self would regret.
One such example would be this jealous boyfriend from New Zealand.
What Happened
33-year-old Taputoro Meihana Deane Delamere arrived in Singapore on 13 November last year with his 29-year-old girlfriend of nine months, who is also from New Zealand.
A few days into their trip, they decided to visit a club on 16 November, and that’s when disaster struck. His girlfriend danced with another man in the club, and this made Taputoro jealous and mad.
Well, one would understand why Taputoro got jealous because I mean, who would be happy if they saw their own partner getting close and intimate with someone else of their preferred sex?
They returned to their hotel room which was located on the seventh storey of MBS at around 4am and they argued. He then turned physical and started assaulting her. He even smashed her phone against the wall.
Now, his jealousy can be understood but that’s definitely not the way to resolve things. Remember guys, nothing good comes out of violence.
After this, he went on a rampage and used a chair to smash the glass panel at the balcony. He tried to drag his girlfriend to the window because he wanted to force her to jump with him. Thankfully, the lady managed to escape without suffering any more harm.
At around 5.30am, for some reason, he decided to throw two suitcases, two backpacks and one metal pole from the room. They all landed on a road nearby and luckily, no one was injured from his killer-litter actions.
20 minutes later, a police report was made and they observed him from the balcony of the room next to his because he had locked himself in.
When he noticed the police officers, he yelled at them and taunted them to catch him.
Still fuelled by rage, Taputoro climbed over the balcony via the parapet into the officers’ room.
They attempted to arrest him but he fought them off. As a result, one of them fell and hit the back of his head against a glass door.
The Court Hearing
Taputoro essentially trashed the hotel room. He broke the room’s main door, three glass balcony panels, several chairs, a coffee table, a sprinkler head, and more. The damages totalled up to more than $8,700.
He later apologised for his actions and said that he disappointed his partner and four children.
He was yesterday sentenced to jail for three months and four weeks, though his sentence was backdated to 22 November last year, when he was held in remand.
He pleaded guilty to one charge each for a rash act endangering the safety of others, voluntarily causing hurt, and voluntarily hurting a police officer. Two other charges for hurting a police officer and mischief were also considered.
He could have been jailed for up to seven years, and fined or caned for every count of voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty.
