With the development of infrastructure in Singapore, some of you may know about Selective En Bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS) carried out by the Housing Development Board (HDB).
In particular, one of the SERS projects being carried out now involved 31 blocks at Tanglin halt that are slated to be torn down by 2024.
With that, many residents in the area have begun to move out of their HDB units and have packed their personal belongings in order to transport them to their new houses as well.
But it seems like they’re not the only ones who’ve been busy from all the house-moving.
Man Caught Stealing Items from Corridor outside HDB Units
Recently, a resident in the area alerted Shin Min Daily News to a rather strange occurrence that had been observed at Block 31 of Tanglin Halt Road.
The resident, a 30-year-old man surnamed Chen, explained to Shin Min that his mother lives in the block, and that he has been helping his mother pack her belongings in preparation for her to move out of the unit.
Due to the small size of the house, his family decided to put some of the items along the corridor so that they can sort out the items more effectively.
According to Shin Min, there are other residents that have done the same, and there are only around three units per block that are still occupied by residents as of now.
Chen then recalled how he was moving a table to the corridor one day when he realised that something was amiss.
He had brought the biscuits, drinks and plates that were originally on the table to the corridor first before returning to the unit to move the table.
When he returned to the corridor with the table, he realised that the plates were gone.
He also heard footsteps and found it odd as most of his mother’s neighbours had already moved out of their units.
After the incident, he chatted with a neighbour who had not moved out yet.
It was only then that he realised that there had been a thief.
However, Chen chose not to lodge a police report since did not have any evidence. Additionally, the plates were not expensive either.
And it seems like Chen isn’t the only one that has had such an experience.
Other residents also reported having other items stolen from them after they placed them along the corridor to facilitate easier transportation for their move-out day.
The items stolen range from flower pots to chairs.
CCTV footage revealed that a man had indeed taken residents’ items from the corridors.
