Life always has a way of catching you off-guard.
Like those days when you think your day can’t get any worse but something amazing happens at the end and you instantly forget all the terrible things that had happened earlier on.
And other times, you feel like you’re on top of the game and everything is perfect. You can’t ask for more. But then life throws a curveball at you and you’re thrown off the road.
Unfortunately, the latter was what Nur Izadura Abdul Aziz had to go through when she was diagnosed with early-stage Ewing’s sarcoma, a type of bone cancer.
It Took A Toll On Her
Izadura was at the peak of her air stewardess career. After her diagnosis, she was forced to quit her dream job in 2007.
She had discovered the cancer when a torn ligament in her chest did not heal and became a lump.
The test showed that she had bone cancer which could only be treated through chemotherapy. She went through chemo for more than a year, according to World Of Buzz.
During her treatment, she lost all her hair and was very down.
The whole experience was extremely traumatic and she became very paranoid after that.
She could not bear to see any dust and refused to eat certain foods like meat.
“I was too scared to do anything and I lost all my confidence.”
Her Sister Was Battling Cancer As Well
At the time of her diagnosis, her sister was battling leukaemia. The news affected her family and her parents had to split up their responsibilities to take care of the both of them.
Izadura discouraged her children from visiting as she did not want them to see the state that she was in.
“They weren’t afraid of me but they feared the cancer and what it was doing to me.”
Fortunately, after a year-long battle, the doctors told her the news that she has been waiting to hear. Izadura was cancer-free!
However, her sister wasn’t as lucky as her. She succumbed to the disease after a seven-month-long battle.
Took Time Off After
Facing an almost-death can be pretty frightening and traumatic. Izadura took some time off to rebuild her confidence and surrounded herself with her loved ones.
Her old colleagues from Air Asia would always visit her. Once, when she was undergoing a chemotherapy session, CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes even called her!
Now, after 7 years of recovery, she has decided that it’s finally time for her to get back on her feet and pursue her dream job once again.
Started From The Bottom Again
After applying to Air Asia again in 2015 and passing her exams with flying colours for a second time, she needed to start from the very bottom again.
However, after all that she has been through, nothing could drag her down.
It took a few years, but she eventually managed to get back on track and to her previous position.
Thankful For The Support
Behind every successful person, there’s an army of supportive people.
In Izadura’s case, those people were her parents and her husband.
She mentioned that her mother had just retired when she was diagnosed so she was able to take care of her while her husband took care of their children.
Her husband fought the battle with her and offered her all the support she needed so that she was able to recover both physically and mentally.
Izadura hopes that she will be able to inspire people to face obstacles head-on with her story.
