Preschool in Lengkok Bahru That Has a Teacher Infected with COVID-19 to Close Until 27 Mar 2020

15 Mar isn’t a good day in Singapore. We have 14 new Covid-19 cases reported, the highest reported in a day so far.

And out of 14 of them, 9 are likely to be import cases:

And one of the cases is a 28-year-old female Filipino national who works in Singapore and is linked to Case 204.

She is a teaching staff at MY World Preschool at the Leng Kee branch (52 Lengkok Bahru).

Preschool Closed Temporarily For Two Weeks

According to a press release by the Ministry of Social and Family (MSF), MY World Preschool at the Leng Kee branch (52 Lengkok Bahru) will be temporarily closed for two weeks.

The closure will take effect from 16 Mar to 27 Mar 2020.

And before you ask why the closure isn’t for a full 14-day, MSF clarified that the teacher was last in the preschool on 13 Mar 2020.

So the duration of this closure covers the 14-day incubation period.

All the teachers and students in the centre are given Leave of Absence (LOA) to cover this period of inactivity.

Activities at the centre will resume on 28 Mar 2020.

Preschool To Be Thoroughly Cleaned & Disinfected

Meanwhile, MY World Preschool Ltd will thoroughly clean and disinfect the preschool premises.

They will also closely monitor the staff and parents on the health of the children.

MSF added that the preschool has followed earlier measures put in place by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Early Childhood Development Authority (ECDA) guidelines:

  • Restricting visitors
  • Suspending large group and communal activities
  • Stopped excursions and field trips
  • Stepping up of temperature screening and health checks for both children and staff.

Preschool Staff & Students Advised To Stay Home

During this period, both staff and children are advised to stay home during this period.

MOH asks for this group of people to avoid crowded places or attend any social gatherings.

Currently, contact tracing is being done.

Case 221 & Case 204

The preschool teacher, case 221, has no recent travel history to any affected countries or regions.

She is, however, a close contact of case 204, a 32-year old American national with a work pass.

She was tested positive on 15 Mar and is now in isolation at NCID.

Case 204, however, was in Japan from 29 Feb to 8 Mar 2020. He reported symptoms on 11 Mar and was tested positive for Covid-19 on 13 Mar 2020.

Before he was admitted into the hospital, he mostly stayed home at the Tanjong Pagar Road area.

Don’t Worry, Kids Are Strong

Now, if you’re a parent who sends your kid to preschools, don’t be too overly worried by this situation.

For one, the relevant authorities (ECDA, MOH and MSF) are putting into place more measures to prevent such a situation from happening again.

Some include:

  • Leave of Absence (LOA) for teachers and students returning from China
  • Restriction of visitors
  • More temperature taking and health checks
  • More handwashing
  • And more

And two, data seems to indicate that kids are “safer” from fatality when faced with the Covid-19 virus.

While that is reassuring, it doesn’t mean we can stop taking the necessary precautions or be socially irresponsible.
