There is no doubt that the people who are spearheading the battle against the COVID-19 are our dear medical workers.
They have positioned themselves at our frontlines in order to detect and treat those who might have the dreaded coronavirus.
And while the task is daunting and the workload is heavy, some medical workers have taken it upon themselves to approach the outbreak positively and by detailing it through blog posts:
S’pore Doctor Has an Entertaining Blog That Details the Fight Against COVID-19
A doctor who is working in a hospital shares with 8days.sg how healthcare workers like herself are coping with the stresses of the battle against the COVID-19.
Not only that, but she has taken it upon herself to detail the whole journey on her ever-entertaining blog.
Jade Kua, 41, is a senior pediatric emergency specialist and a mother of six.
She shared on her blog how after the DORSCON Orange was announced, her bubble tea deliveries to the hospital were cancelled because everyone was panicking.
Later though, she shared a heartening piece of news that a group of other mothers treated them to bubble tea by having them delivered straight to her house.
It was also hard for her to book transport to get to and fro her house and the hospital.
She believes that it is especially important to keep the spirits up as the fight against the COVID-19 might or might not be long drawn.
Luckily, despite the long hours in the hospital and the challenges they faced since DORSCON orange was announced, things got better by the second week.
“In the rest of the days that followed, we were overwhelmed by the good wishes that flooded in from the community. Handwritten notes of encouragement, daisies and more bubble tea kept our spirits high.”
“Week 2 of DORSCON Orange sure seemed less depressing than the week before. I think, because of these gestures of kindness, we were able to develop a strong sense of mental fortitude. This despite long hours & increasing cases of COVID-19, with no end in sight.”
Asks Patients & Caregivers To Trust Medical Professionals
If there is one thing that struck me while reading her blog, is her plea for Singaporeans to place their trust in medical professionals.
“Something that won’t cost a single cent. And that is to trust us, healthcare professionals. Trust us as we trust you.”
She goes on to explain that a certain level of honesty from patients is required.
“Specifically, when the screeners & triage nurses ask if your child has fever or cough, if so, please state this. If you don’t trust that we know where to site you, which might be a high risk area if you’ve also traveled to China, things may not run smoothly. For instance if you don’t disclose this information, doctors and patients around you might be affected because we’re not in the right protective gear. The thing is, we trust you. So please honestly declare your symptoms, travel and contact history.”
She also says that we might not be able to outsmart the virus but we can react, cope and mitigate.
“Can we outsmart a virus? Maybe not. But we can learn, react, cope and mitigate. And we can do this best, together. The entire community, and extensive healthcare team, working together, with open hearts.”
And with that, let’s stay safe everyone and thank our medical professionals for their blood, sweat and tiers as they work overtime to keep us safe.
