S’porean Seriously Injured In Phuket Now Back in S’pore Due To Kind Strangers’ Donations

It’s always fun to go overseas, be it with your friends, family, partner, or even on your own. It’s always nice to explore the land other than your own and experience the culture there.

Of course, it’s going to be enjoyable, unless, tragedy strikes.

This was the case for 28-year-old Singaporean Elyna Azman who went on vacation in Phuket, Thailand with her fiancé and two other friends.

Got Into Accident Overseas

They had happily departed for their destination on last Thursday morning, 9 January. Everything was going as planned and they were going to have so much fun, but at around 10pm that same day, Elyna’s family received a dreadful call from her fiancé telling them that Elyna had gotten into an accident.

According to Berita Mediacorp, a van collided into the motorcycle she was riding on, causing her to suffer from serious head injuries. The collision also left her with a swollen right eye.

An ambulance was called to the scene and paramedics had to rush her to Vachira Phuket Hospital. It was also reported that she was convulsing so much that the staff had to tie her down.

Hearing this news, her family immediately booked a flight to Phuket, along with two cousins and an aunt.

Unfortunately, Elyna did not purchase any travel insurance for her trip, so it was difficult to make medical arrangements. They wanted to bring her back to Singapore for treatment, but it would cost them up to $40,000 just to transport her back.

Her family also had to ask for help from the Singaporean Embassy in Thailand and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

Asked For Donations

Desperate to save Elyna, their family asked everyone they knew for loans and donations, and they only managed to gather about $22,000 by 5pm the next day.

Elyna’s sister then shared about her sister’s plight and appealed for donations on Facebook.

Thankfully, through the help of the internet, her sister posted an update on 11 January thanking everyone for their support and donations as they were eventually able to bring Elyna back to Singapore safely. She is currently in the ICU at NUH.

A friend of Elyna also updated everyone that Elyna’s condition was stable and that there was no urgent need for brain surgery.

As of last night, Elyna has been able to react to pain as her sedatives are gradually reducing. The doctor will also put her on a chair to observe her condition further.

Wishing For Her To Get Well Soon

It is heartwarming to see everyone lend a helping hand by donating to Elyna’s family so that they could bring her home for treatment. They expressed their gratitude towards everyone as well as the EMA Global for bringing her back safely.

We sincerely hope that Elyna will get well soon.
