Amidst feasting and visiting family members, Chinese New Year is a fun, joyous affair.

However, you might want to take note of your zodiac sign and bai tai sui, lest misfortune befalls you.

What is Tai Sui?

In Chinese astrology, Tai Sui (太岁) is the Grand Duke of Jupiter. 

Some people refer to Tai Sui as the constellation that influences a person’s life, while others see Tai Sui as a celestial being.

It is a Chinese belief that Tai Sui influences a person’s luck for the year, depending on their zodiac sign.

Every year, a few Zodiacs clash with Tai Sui, which may bring bad luck.

How does Tai Sui Affect You?

If you haven’t heard of Tai Sui till now, don’t panic. You did not unknowingly offend a deity.

It just means that your Zodiac’s stars are in a bad position relative to Tai Sui’s stars.

Thus, it is inevitable at some point in our lives for our Zodiac to conflict with Tai Sui.

It is believed that if you clash with Tai Sui, you cannot afford to be reckless as you will be prone to conflicts and setbacks such as relationship problems, financial losses and bad health.

Overview of Affected Zodiacs in 2023 (Year of the Rabbit)

For the upcoming year of the Rabbit, those who clash with Tai Sui are people born in the year of the Rabbit, Rooster, Dragon, Rat and Horse.

Those born in the year of the Rabbit (1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987 or 2011) may experience uncertainties regarding their career, health and life.

Roosters (1945, 1957, 1969, 1975, 1981, 1993, 2005 or 2017) may have below-average luck, which may cause problems in their career and wealth. It may even cause conflicts with work colleagues.

Dragons (1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 or 2012) are most likely to encounter hai tai sui (害太岁), one of the worst types of Tai Sui. Those affected may experience a mix of bad and good luck in terms of career and relationships. 

For those born in the year of the Horse (1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 or 2014), they will be subjected to po tai sui (破太岁), which sounds scary because it translates to “breaking Tai Sui”. However, it is fortunately not as bad as other types of Tai Sui. Nevertheless, those with the Horse Zodiac should remain vigilant.

Those with the Rat zodiac (1948, 1960, 1972. 1984, 1996, 2008 or 2020) will encounter xing tai sui (刑太岁), which primarily affects wealth. 

What to do if Your Zodiac Clashes with Tai Sui

You can go to a temple and bai tai sui, meaning praying and giving offerings to Tai Sui. If you are unsure how to do so, you can ask the staff for assistance as they’d offer the service.

Usually, you will need to tell them your Zodiac sign and provide your Chinese name and date of birth, including the time you were born.

Don’t be too worried about being hindered by clashing Tai Sui. As long as you work hard, be kind to others and think about risks thoroughly before acting, you should be able to live life relatively peacefully.

In addition, the course of your life is ultimately up to you, regardless of what astrologers say. Working hard, being kind and taking calculated risks are good habits, even if your Zodiac isn’t affected by Tai Sui.

Because if you don’t work hard, even bai-ing tai sai every day won’t help.
