As Minister of State for Health Janil Puthucheary said on Monday (1 Nov), Singapore has managed to keep its COVID-19 death rate “very low”, and has one of the lowest fatality rates in the world.

At the start of the pandemic, this was due to our tight restrictions, but now it’s because of our high vaccination rate.

However, even though the rate is low, many people are still dying from the disease simply because of the large number of COVID-19 cases being detected every day.

Several deaths have been reported daily for the past few weeks, and yesterday was no different.

9 COVID-19 Fatalities 

9 more COVID-19 cases died from complications, bringing our death toll to 430.

Aged between 53 and 93, all the fatalities had various medical conditions except two unvaccinated cases.

3,496 New COVID-19 Cases

3,496 new COVID-19 cases were reported yesterday (2 Nov), an increase of 1,026 from the previous day’s tally.

The cases comprise 3,352 infections in the community, 141 in migrant worker dormitories, and three imported infections.

Among the local cases are 538 seniors above 60.

Currently, the weekly infection growth is at 1.09.

MOH Closely Monitoring 7 Large Clusters

The Ministry of Health (MOH) said it’s currently monitoring seven large clusters with new cases, the largest of which is at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).

With nine new infections, the cluster has swelled to 287 cases. 271 patients and 16 staff members have been infected there.

One case each was also added to the clusters at St Luke’s Hospital and AWWA Community Home for Senior Citizens, taking their totals to 21 and 86 respectively. 84 residents at the home have been infected, while 17 patients at the hospital have contracted the disease.

Four more cases were linked to the NTUC Health Nursing Home (Geylang East), which now has 11 cases, all of whom are residents.

The three remaining clusters are:

• Jamiyah Home for the Aged (Tampines) – two new cases, 47 in total
• Acacia Home – one new case, 23 in total
• Banyan Home @ Pelangi Village – three new cases, 90 in total

1,710 COVID-19 Cases in Hospital; 138 in ICU

At the moment, there are 1,710 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.

308 serious cases require oxygen supplementation and 138 are in the intensive care unit, comprising 74 cases who are unstable and under close monitoring, and 64 who are critically ill and intubated.

Over the past seven days, the number of fully vaccinated and non-fully vaccinated cases who have been critically ill in the ICU are at 0.5 and 4.5 per 100,000 population respectively.

The same figures for seniors aged 60 and above are 1.9 and 35.6 respectively.

Over the same period, the number of fully vaccinated and non-fully vaccinated cases who died are 0.1 and 0.8 per 100,000 population respectively.

The same figures for seniors aged 60 and above are 0.3 and 7.6 respectively.

Currently, 84% of our population has been fully vaccinated and 85% have received at least one dose. 16% have received their booster shots.
