The remains of a 73-year-old man were found in the Kallang River on 19 November after SCDF rescue teams were called in.

Tragically, rescue forces were initially contacted to save him from the river, but the man was nowhere to be found.

SCDF’s Response

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) was made known of the incident at 11.45 am.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was then alerted at 1.05 pm on Saturday (19 Nov) about the man, and they went to the scene intending to provide “water rescue assistance”.

Yet, once the SCDF arrived at the Kallang River, there was no one who appeared to be in need of rescue.

Since their rescue search was to no avail, the SCDF deployed divers from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) to conduct an underwater search for the person.

It was only then that the body of the man was found and pronounced dead by SCDF officials.

Identity of the Man

The deceased has been identified as a 73-year-old man, but further details on his identity have not been released.

How the man ended up in the river is also unclear, but the authorities have ruled out the possibility of homicide.

Further investigations to determine the man’s exact cause of death are currently ongoing.
In response to Shin Min Daily News’s Facebook post reporting the incident, many netizens have also shown their condolences.

Similar Incidents have Occurred Over the Years

Unfortunately, It is not the first time human remains have been found in the Kallang River.

Early this year, scattered bones and remains were unearthed under the Kallang River Bridge, prompting investigations by the police.

Furthermore, in 2021, the body of another elderly man was found floating in the Kallang River.

In 2005, there was also the infamous Kallang River body parts murder, whereby factory supervisor Leong Siew Chor killed his lover and dismembered her body into several parts.

He proceeded to dump the remains in boxes into the Kallang River, where they were eventually found by a cleaner.
