While the COVID-19 has taken millions of lives and stripped people of their livelihoods, it’s also brought to light one important issue that we’ve neglected for too long: mental health.

Those who have already struggled with mental health issues may have had their symptoms exacerbated by COVID-19, due to job losses, confinement, and the inability to see loved ones.

Since such issues are often viewed as a “weakness” of sorts, people sometimes feel ashamed to seek help, and consequently, keep suffering in silence.

SCDF Rescue Elderly Woman Who Stood on a Ledge Outside a Jurong HDB Flat

On Friday morning (20 Aug) at about 10:35 am, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received a call for assistance at Block 113 Tao Ching Road.

When officers arrived, they found an elderly woman standing on a ledge outside her kitchen.

Fortunately, the woman was rescued in the end and carried back inside her flat.

Speaking to AsiaOne, SCDF said that a safety life air pack was deployed as a precautionary measure.

Video Shows Three Officers Carrying Woman From Ledge Back into Her Flat

A witness from a nearby building recorded the rescue and shared the footage with the Facebook page ROADS.sg.

The video begins with two SCDF personnel holding on to the lady on the ledge from her kitchen.

At the 17-second mark, another officer emerges from the window of the HDB unit above, and rappels down to assist the firefighters.

The rescuer was reportedly from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART).

Once the rescuer is on the same ledge as the woman, he hoists her up by her legs while the two SCDF officers in her kitchen grab onto her upper body and begin to pull her in.

Eventually, they manage to get her entire body back into the flat.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Woman Who Stood on Ledge of Yishun HDB Rescued

A similar incident took place last year in July, where SCDF personnel had to rescue a woman after she was found standing on the ledge of an HDB block.

The incident occurred at Block 805 Yishun Ring Road.

In a video that has since been deleted, a woman could be seen standing on a ledge between the 11th and 12th storeys of the block. Both her feet were jutting out over the ledge, so it looked like she could fall at any time.

On the ground, SCDF personnel could be seen preparing an air cushion, but police officers managed to pull the lady off the ledge to safety before it was deployed.

According to Stomp, the police said the 59-year-old woman was arrested under the Mental Health Act.
