After Joseph Schooling’s exit from the Olympics, we are admittedly feeling a bit down.

Frustrated even, despite knowing that his father was battling cancer while Schooling was at the Olympics.

We thought all hopes are lost for Team Singapore this year until this happened.

Securing the Second to Final Spot for the Medal Race

Kimberly Lim and Cecilia Low had made Singaporean history by becoming the first national sailors to make it into the top 10 for the women’s skiff 49er FX race at the Olympics.

They finished 9^th out of 21 teams after 12 races with a net point of 97.

This also means that they qualify for the medal race that will take place tomorrow (2 August) at the Enoshima Yacht Harbour in Fujisawa, Japan.

So, be sure to tune in and cheer for them!

The defending champions from Brazil (Kahena Kunze and Martine Grael) and the pair from Netherlands (Annette Duetz and Annemiek Bekkering) are tied in first place with 70 net points, while Germany is in third place with 73 net points.

Lim and Low made history yet again when they managed to snag first place – even though it’s only for 33 minutes and 47 seconds – during the 11^th race.

Of course, there are also the bragging rights as they are the only Asian team to make it into the top 10 in the Tokyo Olympics Games 2020.

Both Japan and China didn’t qualify as they placed 18^th and 19^th respectively.

During an interview with The Straits Times, Low said that the race has been intense and that the other teams in the top 10 are “super experienced” and “super good”.

Lim added that they had to compete against only 9 boats this time around.

Because it’s a small race, it’s all about protecting their position rather than opening and looking for a strategy, Lim continued.

The president of the Singapore Sailing Federation (SSF), Lincoln Chee, congratulated the duo as well, stating that much of the credit should go to them as they’ve showed “great commitment, talent, hard work and sacrifice”.

The Other Singaporean Sailors at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Both Ryan Lo and Amanda Ng qualified for their respective races, men’s Laser and windsurfing, in Oman as they finished first in the Asian qualifiers.

After 10 races, Lo finished 21^st out of 35 while Ng got the second to last spot out of 27 windsurfers after 12 races.
