Tofu is pretty tasty, isn’t it?

It goes great with just about every savoury sauce, has a large amount of protein, and is low in calories.

You can find it in soups, vegetarian dishes, and even some desserts.

And there’s more than one way to make it.

One tofu factory in Kuala Lumpur has a rather unconventional processing method for its tofu: mixing it with a huge pile of cockroaches.

Tofu Factory in KL Shut Down Due to Hygiene Issues

If you’re a tofu fan, I’d suggest you avert your eyes now.

A tofu processing factory in in Jalan Pudu Ulu Cheras in Kuala Lumpur has been shut down by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) on Monday (15 June) after it violated several health and safety regulations.

According to The Star, officers who raided the factory said it was infested with cockroaches and littered with rat droppings.

The mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan, said the floor and ceiling of the room where the tofu was processed were also black and dirty, and the toilet was extremely smelly.

And it’s not just that. From the evidence at the site, DBKL said the tofu was prepared on the floor, as there were traces of tofu all over the place.

Moreover, the operators of the factories weren’t wearing headgear or gloves. Some of them weren’t even wearing shirts.

The factory was ordered to close for 14 days under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983, reported The Star.

“If found to be still dirty, a new closing notice will be issued and there’s a possibility the factory’s license will be cancelled,” Datuk Nor said.

“I urge all parties involved in food production to maintain extreme hygiene and product quality.”

“DBKL will fight against all dirty manufacturers like this.”

Inspector Nearly Threw Up After Seeing the Place

One DBKL officer from the health and environment department said that he was so repulsed by the conditions of the factory that he nearly vomited.

“I could not help myself and almost threw up.”

“It was so disgusting and I felt queasy throughout the time I was there,” he said.

The officer has sworn off tofu as a result.
