In case you are unaware of the whereabouts of our Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong (PM Lee), he recently left the country to be in Rome, Italy to attend the G20 Summit.

And he squeezed in some time to talk about Singapore.

PM Lee Says S’pore is Making Progress in COVID-19 Fight But Warns of Potential Surprises

Speaking to the media at the end of G20 Summit in Rome, PM Lee touched on the progress that Singapore is facing in our fight against COVID-19.

Although Singapore is “making progress” against COVID-19, PM Lee also warned about the potential “surprises” that Singapore might face. The same “surprises” the European countries encountered.

If you’re wondering what “surprises” and is it a blind box?

No. The “surprise” that he signifies the raising COVID-19 cases just like those in Western Europe.

Due to that, Singapore will safely reopen the borders eventually – maybe in a few months.

For now, we are taking things “one step at a time”.

We are Making Progress

Although with the four-digit case number daily, it seems like we are going backwards, but we are actually making progress.

PM Lee understands that the situation is wearing us out but he has confidence that we will get to the bright future that we envision.

A Comparison to Italy COVID-19 Cases

Italy, which has one of the highest vaccination rates in Europe, has more than 72% of their population fully vaccinated.

Although the Italian borders are opened to visitors with some restrictions, that does not mean they have zero COVID-19 cases or zero COVID-19 deaths.

With a population 11 times bigger than Singapore, Italy has recorded about 4.7 million cases and 132,000 deaths from COVID-19.

If you were to compare it to the same scale in Singapore, that is about 11,000 to 12,000 deaths.

Instead, as of 31 Oct, Singapore’s death toll stands at 407.

Catching Up With Fellow Leaders

Aside from touching on COVID-19 and its impact, PM Lee also spent some time catching up with fellow leaders.

You can actually “stalk” PM Lee on his Facebook page where he depicted his journey in Rome.

Currently, PM Lee is “on the way home now.”

A Return to Rome?

Although PM Lee did not visit the Colosseum, he did toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain with the other G20 Leaders. This coin-tossing tradition ensures a return to Rome.

Looks like PM Lee may visit the Colosseum in the future.
