While we’ve had over 2,000 new COVID-19 infections daily for several days, the number of cases fell for the second consecutive day yesterday.
What’s more, no new large clusters were identified by the Ministry of Health (MOH).
But the good news ends there, because several COVID-19 cases are sadly continuing to succumb to the disease.
6 More Seniors Passed Away Due to COVID-19
Six more seniors have passed away due to COVID-19 complications.
Aged between 68 and 91, five of the cases were male Singaporeans and the other, a female Singaporean.
Two had been unvaccinated, while four had been fully vaccinated. Five of them had underlying medical conditions, while one unvaccinated case had no known medical conditions.
These six fatalities have brought Singapore’s COVID-19 death toll to 113.
2,057 COVID-19 Cases
2,057 new COVID-19 cases were reported yesterday, comprising 1,676 community cases and 373 dormitory residents.
Among the local cases were 430 seniors above the age of 60.
In addition, eight imported cases were detected; all tested positive on their arrival here.
9 Active Large Clusters
No new clusters were detected by MOH, but several of our existing clusters grew. This includes Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre which swelled to 240 cases after three more infections were detected.
Another fast-growing cluster is at Avery Lodge, which now has 439 infections.
29 new cases were also linked to North Coast Lodge, taking its total to 411 cases.
In all the dorm clusters that the health ministry is monitoring, intra-dormitory transmission is involved, and there’s no evidence of spread beyond the dormitory.
1,337 COVID-19 Cases in Hospitals; 35 in ICU
At the moment, there are 1,337 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
250 severe cases require oxygen supplementation and 35 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Of these serious cases, 242 are seniors above the age of 60.
Over the last four weeks, 98.1% of the local cases were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.
As of Monday, 82% of our population has been fully vaccinated. 85% have received at least one dose.
More COVID-19 Facilities Will Be Opened to “Augment & Complement” Hospital Capacity
Last week, the authorities said more medical facilities need to be opened up to care for COVID-19 patients, or we run the risk of overwhelming the healthcare system.
And soon, they’ll be doing just that.
By the end of this month, there’ll be nine COVID-19 treatment facilities with an overall capacity of about 3,700 beds. Four of them have already been set up, and can accommodate 580 patients.
Another 700 beds will be set up at Singapore Expo and 200 more at Sengkang General Hospital.
Beds will be sent to Yishun and Ren Ci community hospitals as well.
These facilities will be used to house higher-risk patients who require close observation but do not need to be hospitalised, such as seniors with comorbidities who are asymptomatic or with mild symptoms.
These facilities, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said, will “augment and complement our hospital capacity.
