When we think of Taiwan, what do we usually associate them with?

Crispy chicken cutlets?

Braised pork rice?

Torched beef cubes?

Well for me, food is not the only thing I think of.

It is also the endless stream of stores with claw machines filled with tons of cute plushies.

Every time I walked past one, I would try my luck. It was an accomplishment when you manage to grab a toy. We all know it’s rigged one way or another, but somehow, many of us still fall into the system just to feel that sense of accomplishment.

While many of us walk away after not getting the plushie we want after several tries because you know, it’s kind of a waste of money, some people just don’t have that mindset.

If they want something, they need to have it.

So guess what this 22-year-old Taiwanese lady did?

She stole the dolls.

But how?

By crawling inside the claw machine.

The incident occurred in the early hours of 4 December, the perfect time to do a crime and not get caught, or so she thought.

When she stumbled upon this particular store with claw machines, she looked around to ensure that the coast was clear before she attempted her heist.

CCTV footage of her heist was captured and released, and it’s interesting how she did it.

 

She started off by kneeling onto the floor and then squeezing herself through the chute. As she does so, she repeatedly adjusts her position to make her entry easier.

Moments later and you’ll see her head pop out of the area where toys usually drop into when they are successfully caught.

She uses one arm to randomly smack the dolls, probably trying to feel around for a doll that was worth stealing – a big one.

She grabs one and she pulls it to herself.

And you thought she would be satisfied with just one?

Nah man. Good things come in pairs.

She pushes herself further in this time, even kicking off her sliders to ensure that she has better grip on the metal chute.

Shit’s getting serious now. She’s almost there.

She reaches out again and feels around for another big one, and she grabs it. After pulling it to herself once more, she begins her descent out into the real world.

With her two plushies in hand, she happily leaves the store.

The shopkeeper doesn’t notice anything amiss until he discovered the missing toys. He filed a police report and reviewed the CCTV footage, and that’s when he realised what actually happened.

Police Investigation

With the help of the CCTV footage, the police were able to quickly identify the lady and bring her in for questioning that very same evening.

Of course, the toys she stole weren’t spared either and they were brought in too.

According to Setn, the shopkeeper claimed that the shop suffered TWD$3,000 (~S$135) in losses.

Netizens React

The CCTV footage was also subsequently shared on Facebook, possibly because of the lady’s interesting attempt at a heist.

Netizens were impressed by her ability to contort her body in such a way where she’s able to enter the rather small chute.

One even commented that if he was the shopkeeper, he would give her two more plushies for the effort after he reports her to the police.

Another questioned how she wasn’t afraid that she wouldn’t get stuck.

One netizen added that if one wants to be a thief, they should take a look around the store first because there’s always a third pair of eyes watching their every action.

A few netizens also expressed their disappointment in her education that she became a thief at such a young age.

Clearly, while some were amused, some still condemned her actions, questioning her decision to steal plushies, of all things.

Many were also surprised that she, a grown woman, didn’t get stuck like how many kids did when they tried entering claw machines through the chute.

While these prizes may be enticing to you, you should never resort to stealing. Hopefully this would be the last that we hear of people trying their luck at stealing plushies from claw machines.
