Yesterday (9 Oct) marked a day with a new record: we’re finally seeing a double-digit death count on a day.
As of 12pm on 9 October, the Ministry of Health has detected a total of 3,703 new cases of COVID-19 infection in Singapore, with 2,868 in the community, 832 in the migrant worker dormitories and 3 imported cases.
248 of them are above 70 years old, and 363 of them are between 61 to 70 years old.
11 Deaths Reported
11 more people passed away from complications due to COVID-19 infection.
Of these, five were male Singaporeans and six were female Singaporeans, aged between 56 and 90 years.
Amongst them, four had been unvaccinated against COVID-19, three had been partially vaccinated and four had been vaccinated.
10 of them had various underlying medical conditions, while a partially vaccinated case had no known medical conditions.
Amongst those who have passed away over the last 28 days, 30.6% were fully vaccinated and 69.4% were unvaccinated/ partially vaccinated.
If the mortality rate isn’t enough to encourage people to take their jabs, yesterday’s announcement might.
No Dining Out or Entering Malls for Unvaccinated Individuals
Lest you’re not aware, PM Lee addressed the nation yesterday, followed by a press conference held by the COVID-19 task force.
One of the announcements was, as some netizens would say, a “low-key declaration of war against the unvaccinated”.
From Wednesday (13 Oct), unvaccinated individuals will not be allowed to enter shopping malls, dine-in at hawker centres and coffee shops, or visit attractions.
They can still buy take-away food, though.
As co-chair of the tasks force Gan Kim Yong explained, these measures will “further protect those who are not fully vaccinated”.
“There have been a few settings frequently visited by a significant proportion of infected individuals, including those who are unvaccinated, who later on fell very ill. Such settings include (food and beverage) outlets, retail establishments and shopping centres,” he said.
However, kids 12 years old or below are exempted from this rule since all of them are unvaccinated.
Summary of Local Situation
Currently, 1,569 cases are currently warded in hospital. 302 cases require oxygen supplementation and 40 are in the intensive care unit (ICU).
Over the last 28 days, of the 52,807 infected individuals, 98.4% had no or mild symptoms, 1.3% required oxygen supplementation, 0.1% required ICU care, and 0.2% has died.
As of 8 October 2021, 83% of our population has completed their full regimen/ received two doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and 85% has received at least one dose.
