5 Telegram Shortcuts You Probably Didn’t Know About

Think you know all about trendy messaging app Telegram and all that it entails?

Well, it might be time to reconsider that notion.

See, like many communication platforms before it, Telegram has more features than it appears at first glance…

Including sick shortcuts that will change the way you use the app… forever.

5 Telegram Shortcuts You Probably Didn’t Know About

1. Chat Folders

One of Telegram’s more prominent features happens to be its Channel & Group function, which allows you to join different public chat groups all around the country (and the world).

But there’s just one thing about it; it gets pretty darn messy if you’re a big-time social butterfly. All those groups littered across your home page, making it hard for you to even find the one you’re looking for?

It can get pretty irritating.

But not to worry, because Telegram actually has something called “Chat Folders”.

Simply put, this nifty function allows you to categorise your chats into different labels, and Telegram will proceed to take it from there.

Super smooth, and super clean. Truly, it’s an OCD’s dream.

To use, open the ‘hamburger’ menu and move to Settings -> Folders. Here, tap on “Create New Folder” and implement a name like personal, work, my Aunt Matilda’s darkest secrets, funtime, etc. Then you just have to add the chats that you want to appear in this folder!

Telegram will adapt accordingly to your preferences, and the main screen will also shift to a tabbed UI that eases the use and management of Telegram.

How convenient.

2. Add Nearby People and Group

Keen to add someone you don’t know to your Telegram without divulging your mobile number?

Well, this feature is gonna come in real handy.

Operational via your location, the feature allows you to locate Telegram users and groups near you. This is especially useful if you’re a big ‘event person’, who frequents conferences, campuses or festivals often.

To use, simply tap on “Add People Nearby” on your ‘Contacts’ page, and you’re settled! If you wish to be seen by other people as well, you can turn on the ‘Make Me Visible’ option in the ‘People Nearby’ window, which will allow nearby users to view your profile even with your Telegram app minimised/closed.

3. Send Silent Messages

This feature is actually pretty darn nifty if used at the correct timing.

Many times, we can get rudely awakened, interrupted or even frightened by unwelcome notification sounds that hit us like a bolt out of the blue. And of course, the same applies for the other party as well. So the question begets;

What can we do to circumvent this notion?

Well, Telegram’s ‘Silent Messages’ feature can just do the trick.

Basically, the feature works exactly as it sounds: you can send messages and it will not make any sound or vibration, even if the recipient did not switch to the ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode.

Exactly.

To use the feature, simply type out your intended message, tap and hold the ‘send’ option and choose “Send without sound”. Quiet, considerate and most importantly, you will never inadvertently bite the short end of the stick ever again.

4. Schedule Messages

Email scheduling is one thing;

But app scheduling? Alright, you got me hooked.

Basically, you can schedule a message simply by pressing and holding the “send” button. Opt for “Schedule message”, choose the date & time, and send!

Now you can be just like Hyun Bin in Crash Landing On You, sending heartfelt messages at different times of the day (year) even when you’re miles apart and have no way of contacting each other.

Just don’t take it too far though. I don’t think anyone is going to be appeased when you schedule a message for every single minute.

5. Self-destruct Media in Normal Chats

The ‘Self-destruct’ feature is a very prevalent and popular option on Telegram, but did you know that it’s no longer limited to the distinct “Secret Chat” option anymore?

Yes, folks; now, you can self-destruct media like photos and videos on normal chats as well!

Simply pick a photo or video, and then tap on the “timer” button. Choose the intended time and the media will be deleted in its entirety once the timer goes off.

Well, secret chats just got a lot more… convenient.

Though with that said, I can only wonder how Telegram will continue to up its game, as its rivalry with WhatsApp reaches an all-time high.

Surprise us, Telegram. You’ve impressed us before, and I’m pretty sure you’ll only do it again.
