Recently, there seemed to be a number of fire-related incidents.

Over 11 emergency vehicles and 40 firefighters were deployed. It took about an hour to extinguished the fire.

In another incident, a boat was caught on fire. Who would have guessed?

A tugboat on West Coast was ablaze on 20 July. It took 20 minutes to put out the fire with a water jet. Eight people were conveyed to Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation.

What to Do if There’s a Fire?

Since there are so many things burning these days, here are some fire safety tips.

Step 1: Assess the Fire. Is it a large or a small fire?

If it is a small fire, head to Step 2. If the fire resembles the fiery pits of hell, head to step 3.

Step 2: Use a large damp towel to cover the fire completely. If the fire comes from a failed cooking attempt, you can cover the wok with a lid as well. Do remember to turn off the gas stove, and if you’re the one cooking, take some cooking courses, please.

Step 3: Call 995 immediately. If you have a dry powder fire extinguisher, use it while waiting for SCDF assistance.

Whatever you do, do not throw water onto an oil, grease or electrical fire.
