Yesterday (24 February 2022), Russian President Vladimir Putin had launched an invasion of Ukraine in the morning, with multiple points of military assaults made including the capital city, Kyiv.
World leaders condemned the act that was not only in violation of international law but an “unscrupulous act” that endangered countless innocent lives.
China, however, refuses to call Russia’s attack an “invasion” during a news conference that was held on Thursday.

Response by China Assistant Foreign Minister, Hua Chunying About Ongoing Conflict Between Russia and Ukraine
When probed on China’s views about Russia’s attacks, China’s assistant foreign minister, Hua Chunying refused repeatedly to term the act as an invasion during a news conference.
Instead, China’s assistant foreign minister implies that the US is the one responsible for making the crisis worse by saying in Mandarin, “The US has been fueling the flame, fanning up the flame, how do they want to put out the fire?”
Throughout the news conference, there is the repeated statement that China urges all parties involved to maintain restraint and that it wants to encourage peace through more dialogue and negotiation.
Besides this, Hua also referred repeatedly to Russia’s government statements where they claim that the Russian armed forces would not strike Ukrainian cities.
However, on Thursday morning, explosions were heard in Ukrainian cities Odesa, Kharkiv, and Mariupol. By Thursday afternoon, dozens of casualties were reported as soldiers and civilians were killed during the attacks.
Actions Taken by World Leaders Against Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine
Currently, the United States and European Union have triggered economic sanctions to isolate Russia’s economy from the world.
The sanctions are an attempt to cut key Russian banks and the Russian government itself from markets abroad. This also includes freezing the assets of some of Putin’s allies. President Biden has also sent additional troops to enhance current defenses present in Europe.
However, Biden has stressed repeatedly that no troops will be sent on to Ukrainian soil as the U.S. intentions are not to fight in Ukraine, “but to defend our NATO allies.”
On 22 February, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has also issued their statement about the crisis and said “the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine must be respected.”
