For many of us, “New Year New Me” is probably a new year’s aspiration that we’d like to achieve.
But some of us have already achieved that even though it’s been just one month into the year.
Like MacPherson’s Member of Parliament (MP) Tin Pei Ling.
Just yesterday (1 February), Grab Singapore confirmed through a statement that Ms Tin is the company’s new Director of Public Affairs and Policy.
“Pei Ling has [a] deep on-ground understanding of [the] digital economy and smart nation policy, and close ties with the local community. She will build partnerships and programmes to harness the positive potential of technology to create impact in Singapore,” a spokesperson said.
Ms Tin, 39, was appointed to her new role in January this year.
However, the three-term MP’s appointment was only disclosed to the public after she attended the tech giant’s Chinese New Year appreciation lunch for its drivers and delivery partners.
Other attendees of the event included Yee Wee Tang, Grab Singapore’s managing director, as well as Senior Minister of State for Transport Amy Khor, who served as the guest of honour.
Used to be Chief Executive Officer of Business China
Before Ms Tin took up her new role at Grab, she was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Business China from May 2018 to December 2022.
For the unaware, Business China is a non-profit organisation handled by the government and the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It strives to help build relationships between Singapore and China.
After holding the role of Business China’s CEO for four-and-a-half years, Ms Tin decided to leave her position as she was interested in pursuing opportunities in the private sector.
However, according to Ms Tin’s LinkedIn page, she is still a board member of Business China even though she stepped down from her CEO position at the end of last year.
Other Titles She Has Held in the Past
And that’s not all.
Ms Tin also held the role of group director of corporate strategy at Jing King Technology Group from May 2017 to May 2018.
The company is now known as Adera Global and is involved with issues such as data security, artificial intelligence and automation.
Before joining politics, she was a business consultant at Ernst and Young, a professional services company in Singapore.
She held that role from 2007 to 2011.
Her Political Career Thus Far
Ms Tin, who is married and a mother of two, was first elected to Parliament over a decade ago in 2011 as part of the five-member team representing the People’s Action Party in the Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency (GRC).
In the following election that took place in 2015, she was part of the three-cornered fight for the seat at the MacPherson Single Member Constituency (SMC).
She emerged victorious with 65.6% of the vote.
She was re-elected as the MP for MacPherson in 2020 when she garnered 71.4% of the vote.
Currently, she is also the chair of the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for Communications and Information.
In addition, she is also a member of the GPC for Culture, Community and Youth.
