23YO M’sian Faces $116K Medical Bills After Accident While Commuting to S’pore to Work

Given the potential to earn more in Singapore than in Malaysia, many Malaysians come to Singapore thinking of making more money.

However, because Singapore is much more expensive than Malaysia, many opt to stay in their home country and do a daily commute southward into our country.

While some might bemoan the time and effort required to do the commute, the reality is that time and energy are not the only factors at stake here.

Travelling across the Causeway is also fraught with danger, such as traffic accidents.

This is especially true since there are many heavy vehicles plying the roads coming in and out of Singapore.

For one young Malaysian, his dream to work and make money in Singapore may have been prematurely cut short due to a traffic accident that injured his spinal cord.

Here is what happened.

23-Year-Old Malaysian Run Over by Truck on His Commute to Singapore

Chinese news publication China Press reported yesterday (7 October 2023) about a young Malaysian chef who met an untimely accident on his way to Singapore.

The victim, who is only 23 years old, was on the way to Singapore for work when he was run over by a truck.

His spinal cord had been severely damaged by the accident, and he was immediately transferred to a local hospital for treatment.

He had to undergo surgery and is now recovering in Singapore.

It is estimated that he will take between six months to two years to fully recover.

However, due to cost issues, he may not be able to recover in Singapore.

The victim’s mother, who spoke to the Malaysian press, said that her son’s medical fees are already approximately S$116K, which is too expensive for the family to bear.

It is a hefty sum indeed.

They plan to transfer him back to Malaysia to continue his treatment.

Her son had just found a job as a chef in Malaysia two months before he met with the accident.

While her son is still receiving treatment in Singapore, he is being cared for by his two sisters. They both work in Singapore as well.

In the meantime, the victim’s employer has been very concerned about his injuries and constantly visits him in the hospital.

What a tragic accident this is. Here’s wishing the victim a speedy recovery.
