With Covid-19, racists now have an additional excuse to act out their racism.
That was what one student studying in London, Jonathan Mok, realised.
He was walking along Oxford Street minding his own business when a group of young men started beating him up.
Throughout the beating, they told him that he has brought the “coronavirus into their country”.
Well, A Lot Has Happened Since Then
His story went viral in Singapore, with the mainstream, as well as non-mainstream, media picking it up.
And what happens when a story goes viral?
The authorities picked it up, just like what happened to Ronan Keating misleading tweet.
The Singapore High Commission (think embassy) got in touch with the London Metropolitan Police to make sure that the investigation into Jonathan Mok’s incident has “the utmost priority”.

The Singapore High Commission also got in touch with UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Home Office to express “concern” for other Singaporean students in the country.
TL; DR: One of ours is hurt and we want to see justice done.

London Metropolitan Police Allegedly Identified The Group Of Young Men
On 4 Mar 2020, the UK Police released 4 photos on their website.
These men are allegedly linked to the attack on Jonathan Yap on 24 Feb 2020.
No arrests have been made yet but the London Metropolitan Police are hoping that members of the public with information on the incident will come forward.
The officer in the case added that there is “no room on our streets for this kind of violent behaviour and we are committed to finding the perpetrators”.
Be Careful When Travelling Overseas
We’ve said this previously and we’ll say it again: take extra care when you’re overseas.
Unlike Singapore, racism is a lot more apparent overseas (just try going to South Korea and speak to them in Chinese, they’ll slam your food on your table).
And with Covid-19, emotions are running high, which could lead to regrettable attacks like this.
So keep an eye on your surroundings, make sure to monitor your health properly and seek medical treatment when unwell.
