It’s done by three teenagers who thought that it would be fun to create panic during the COVID-19 outbreak period.

But this isn’t that bad.

Over in Genting Highlands, Malaysia, some diners didn’t even get to see the spittle.

During this period, we’re told not to even shake another person’s hand.

But this chef in Genting didn’t get the memo.

The joker decided to post this Tweet to his followers because why not.

Here’s what it means in English:

“My job requires a lot out of me. But the best part about it is that I get to spit in the food of Chinese people.”

Jovina Choi won’t be happy.

The CSI detectives in lowyat forums (think of it as Hardwarezone forums in Malaysia) then managed to find more details about this guy.

They even dug out an order form that shows how he knows the race of the diners.

Seriously, what does he hate Ms Choi so much man.

Soon after, the CSI team went deeper and managed to find out which restaurant the guy worked in: it’s apparently a restaurant at Grand Ion Delemen (a 5-star hotel) in Genting Highlands.

Suffice to say, people were even more triggered, given that it’s such a high-class restaurant.

And so, they went even one step further: they contacted the hotel with a screenshot of what the chef has written.

Why screenshot, you wonder.

Because the chef has set his Twitter profile to private after his Tweet went viral.

But like what a wise man said, “Whatever is said on the Internet stays on the world forever.”

And today, the management has replied.

Guy Fired from Restaurant

Today, it’s revealed that the guy has been “released” from employment, which is a fancy way to say “kena fired”.

Here’s the email reply by the hotel:

Dear Guest,

On Tuesday, February 25, we are deeply saddened to learn that one of our employees had engaged in shenanigan on social media and posted racial hatred in his tweet. In quick investigation of the issue, the Commis admitted that he made a personal and yet defamatory statement on his social media without deep-thoughts and rational thinking.

In fact, we have always pride ourselves on our excellent food handling record as food is always supervised by Executive Sous Chef before serving.

Once again, hygiene and food handling have always been and will remain to be a sharp reminder of ours at Grand Ion Delemen Hotel Genting Highlands. Rest assured, we are taking this matter very seriously and the following procedures have been reinforced to avoid such incident:

  • Immediate release of employee from employment
  • Recorded misconduct and profile for future employer’s reference-checking
  • CCTV surveillance and peer support for whistle-blowers
  • Strict implementation on Food Safety Standards and Regulations in Malaysia

We work tirelessly to better our service and your concern is an invaluable part of that process.

However, if you’ve perused the email carefully, you’d realise that the hotel didn’t admit that the chef has spat on Chinese diners’ food; instead, they accused him of engaging in “shenanigan on social media and posted racial hatred in his tweet” and his mistake was “a personal and yet defamatory statement on his social media without deep-thoughts and rational thinking.”

The accusation of the chef spitting on food isn’t addressed at all.

Also, the use of the word “shenanigan” doesn’t seem appropriate here, given that the word is often used in an informal setting.

The restaurant then posted a more professional apology on their Facebook Page:

But still, they didn’t address the alleged extra ingredients in their food.

If there’s one thing you need to learn from this, it’s this: think before you post anything on the Internet.

And don’t spit on food.
