Last November, when people were still queuing up for food instead of surgical masks, it was revealed that 金峰滷肉飯 (Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice) was coming to Singapore. Or to be more specific, it was coming to AMK Hub.
Some called it the “best braised pork rice in Taiwan”, though that is very subjective. Lest you didn’t know, braised pork rice in Taiwan is a tad different from the ones sold in Singapore: the taste is a lot stronger, so it might not be everyone’s favourite.
But it still generated enough publicity.
Instead of using the Chinese name 金峰滷肉飯, the Singapore outlet called itself “Jiak by 金峰”, in which the “Jiak” most probably refers to “eat” in Hokkien.
The shop was opened last December, and suffice to say, it opens at the wrong timing: COVID-19 came shortly.
But thank God for food delivery platforms, foodies can still have their popular braised pork rice with extra ingredient of a big bug at the comfort of their home.
Reader Bao: Did you make a mistake in your paragraph?
No, I didn’t.
A Facebook user apparently found a large bug in her bowl of braised pork rice—and it’s so big, once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

Let’s cut to the chase: Facebook user Nicole Tan posted this on Monday (17 February 2020):
Lest you can’t read, here’s what she’s written:
Am sick and resting at home! Wanted to make myself feel better by ordering my favourite food.
Have wanted to try it since it came to SG!
Buttttt, guess it caused more trauma than anything else!
Went to vomit right away and I don’t have appetite for anything else nowwww!
And the thingy that caused the trauma?
This.
And this.
That’s indeed an appetite killer that Nicole didn’t ask for.
The post has since gone viral with over 350 Shares.
And with her tagging Jiak by 金峰, you can bet that they’re going respond.
And respond they did.

We have since personally contacted the customer who flagged this incident to us. We know the distress it caused her and we wanted to ensure she was alright, also to ensure that we could investigate this incident fully and fulfil the promised actions we had made to her family member.
Our team at Jiak has immediately worked on and investigated fully the following as promised upon receiving the notification:
– All existing batches of cabbages were discarded

– We had immediately arranged an off cycle inspection by our pest control vendor on Tuesday who has confirmed this to be an isolated incident.
-Thorough inspection of our vegetable section and preparation area was conducted by our store manager, management team and pest control.
– We have identified the ingredient affected and are working closely with our supplier to ensure that stringent preliminary checks are performed to prevent this from happening again.
We value the trust and rapport behind our brand, and we’ll be making seasonal vegetables walk in orders complimentary till 23 Feb.
We promise that we have taken steps to fix this issue and will continue to ensure we serve only the best of us to you and all friends of Jiak.

Long story short, they apologised and claimed that this is an isolated incident. And they’ll be giving free seasonal vegetables to walk-in customers until 23 February 2020.
Though I think it’s going to be awkward implementing that.
