Remember back in the days where you download free songs by converting a music video on Youtube into an MP3 file? Or even better, you download them from Napster, hoping that it’s the correct song.
Well, if you’ve indulged in these wrongful behaviours back in your youth, then you might be a proud owner of a pirated set-top box.
Starhub Offers Free Set-Top Box Rental Worth $120 If You Trade in Your Pirated One
Don’t worry, the authorities are not here to catch you. In fact, a service provider is offering you a free set-top box worth S$120 if you trade in your pirated set-top box.
In an effort to fight digital piracy, StarHub is offering two years of free rental of their StarHub TV+ box for the pirates that decide to come clean.
The StarHub TV+ box comes with Disney+ and HBO PAK on the house. Additionally, one can flip between Live channels, streaming apps like Netflix and Video On Demand channels.
That means you can finally skip through the advertisements legally.
Additionally, ex-pirates will get a plug-and-play Android TV-based media player. That media player offers an Ultra HD 4K support, one-screen-for all cinematic viewing experience and an intensely fast internet connection.
All these goodies that are originally worth S$120 are available now for free, though you would need to pay $30 per month for the contents.
Why is StarHub Doing This?
This promotion by StarHub is also in accordance with the recent proposals to amend the Copyright Act. These changes are directed towards businesses that allowed people to do be pirates instead of the consumers of these illegal contents.
However, that does not mean individuals would not be charged if they are caught selling the illegal set-top boxes.
If the bill passed, the changes are expected to kick in from November 2021.
Individuals that are found guilty under the new amendments can be thrown behind bars for up to five years, fined up to S$100,000 or both. For entities like companies, the fine will be doubled.
Where Does the Illegal Set-Top Box Go?
If you’re thinking the staff might take them home and stream the shows illegally, you are wrong.
The surrendered set-top boxes will be disposed of safely and in a sustainable manner with a “reputable e-waste recycler”.

It is also encouraged to make an appointment with them through the My StarHub app before heading to one’s preferred shop.
