It’s not been a good week.
Even though daily COVID-19 case numbers have started to fall, we’ve had two deaths on two consecutive days on Sunday (1 Aug) and Monday (2 Aug).
Sadly, just two days later, a third COVID-19 patient succumbed to the disease.
79YO Man Dies From COVID-19 Complications; Singapore’s 40th COVID-19 Fatality
A 79-year-old man has become Singapore’s COVID-19 40th fatality after he died of complications from the disease.
The man sought treatment on Wednesday (4 Aug) at Sengkang General Hospital for shortness of breath and low blood pressure and was later confirmed to have COVID-19.
Unfortunately, he died later that day.
The man had a history of heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and hypertension.
He was not vaccinated.
This is the third COVID-19 death in just four days.
96 Locally Transmitted Cases
The Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 96 locally transmitted cases yesterday, of whom 38 are unlinked.
Another two cases from abroad were detected, both of whom were placed on stay-home notice or isolated upon arrival.
10 New Clusters
10 new clusters were identified by the authorities yesterday, all of which were linked to individual cases. The clusters ranged from three to five infections.
12 of the locally transmitted cases were linked to the cluster at Jurong Fishery Port/Hong Lim Market and Food Centre, bringing its total to 1,127 infections. It remains our largest active cluster.
Two markets were removed from a list of clusters linked to the Jurong Fishery Port, namely Clementi 448 Market and Food Centre and Haig Road Market and Food Centre.
577 Cases in Hospital; 8 in ICU
At the moment, there are 577 COVID-19 cases in hospital, most of whom are well and under observation.
40 severe cases require oxygen supplementation, while eight are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Of the 48 cases, seven were fully vaccinated; five required oxygen supplementation while two required intensive care because of underlying medical conditions.
36 cases were above 60 and had fallen very ill. Among them, five were fully vaccinated.
Of the 80 local cases requiring oxygen supplementation over the last 28 days, 48 were unvaccinated, 24 were partially vaccinated, and eight were fully vaccinated.
As MOH has been stressing, the evidence shows that vaccination helps to prevent serious disease.
65% Population Fully Vaccinated
The country may still be grappling with a community outbreak, but we’re certainly making progress with our vaccinations.
As of Wednesday (4 Aug), 65% of the Singapore population has been vaccinated with an mRNA vaccine.
78% have also received at least one dose.
Besides the two mRNA vaccines, 115,970 doses of Sinovac vaccines have been administered covering 77,095 people.
Those who have not been inoculated can now walk into any centre offering the Moderna vaccine to get a jab, as they won’t have to make an appointment.
The same will soon be the case for those wanting to get the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Singapore Eases Border Restrictions For Taiwan Travellers
Travellers from Taiwan can soon travel to Singapore without the need for a 14-day stay-home notice (SHN). From 11.59pm tomorrow (7 Aug), travellers will only need to undergo a PCR test.
If they test negative, they can carry on with their activities in Singapore.
This relaxation will only apply to those with a travel history to Taiwan within the last 21 days before departure.
Short-term visitors to Singapore can apply for an Air Travel Pass with immediate effect for entry into Singapore on or after 12 Aug.
Those already serving their SHN, however, need to complete it.
