A Stall in Toa Payoh Has Been Selling $1 Nasi Lemak for 36 Years

As prices are forever increasing in Singapore (side eye at the housing market), some people show us that angels still exist in Singapore, by keeping things affordable even at their own expense.

$1 Nasi Lemak

Where can you find a meal for $1 in Singapore? Sounds impossible, but this family-run food stall in Toa Payoh is keeping it real.

In a Tiktok video, ex-Mp Amrin Amin heads down to Kedai Makan Muhjirin to show us the deal is real.

For 36 years, Mr Tahir and his family have been serving Nasi Lemak for $1, to provide the less fortunate with an affordable food option.

By the way, this is what you’re getting for $1:

A sufficient amount of rice, with a slice of cucumber, egg, fish and sambal.

Profits?

Honestly, it ain’t much, but it’s honest work. And can you really be picky with the food when they’re already selling it at such a shockingly low price?

This then begs the question: How do the family make a profit out of this?

Mr Tahir explained that he preferred to be “kaya budi,” or wealthy in acts and virtue, over having material wealth.

Some people are really too good for this world.

Mr Amrin goes on to praise Mr Tahir’s values, saying that while it’s “food from the heart”, it also encompasses the “value of our community spirit”.

It also helps that the store does sell other dishes other than Nasi Lemak, such as Mee Rebus and Mee Siam.

So if you busted your wallet from overspending (over on a losing streak in mahjong), then head down and support the business whenever you can.
