It’s heartbreaking to know that while most of us are relatively fortunate in that we’re able to afford basic necessities and school supplies, not everyone in other parts of the world or even in Singapore are as lucky.
Take this boy for example:
Boy Who Cannot Afford A Notebook Uses Banana Leaves To Write His Notes On
An underprivileged boy from the Philippines, Erlande Monter did not let his financial situation stop him from getting an education.
Instead, the smart boy took matters into his own hands and improvised when he could not get his hands on notebooks or papers to jot down notes.
Erlande Monter goes to school at Lianga National Comprehensive School.
He’s determined to attend school and get a proper education although he doesn’t have all the materials he needs to do so.
His teacher, Arcilyn Balbin Azarcon Lpt shared the boy’s situation and praised him for his improvisation.
She shared how her student made use of banana leaves to jot down notes because his family wasn’t able to afford notebooks or papers.
She said, “after writing on the board, I roamed around the class to observe a kid writing on a BANANA LEAF instead of a notebook.”
No prizes for guessing who won the best student of the year award.
Looks At His Situation Positively
The boy chose not to look at his situation negatively and even joked about it.
When the teacher collected her students’ notes, he allegedly joked about his teacher checking his ‘notes’ to ensure that he had written everything down correctly.
In fact, he doesn’t feel embarrassed about his makeshift notebook and resolves not to let his financial situation hinder his dreams of becoming a soldier.
His story is truly inspiring to us all and we hope that he will achieve his dreams one day.
Does this make you want to study even harder right now?
