It’s funny how we often call murderers and those who commit heinous crimes “animals”, insinuating that a lack of humanity is the reason they were able to do those awful things.
But anyone who argues that humans are the most rational or empathetic species clearly hasn’t seen the way we treat animals.
I mean, organisations like The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) have to be set up all over the world because so many people seemed to enjoy hurting or even killing animals.
Even now, when there’s a deadly virus spreading all over the country, animal abusers are still mistreating the poor cats and dogs on our streets.
Community Cat in Bukit Merah Allegedly Poisoned to Death
The SPCA is seeking information after a community cat in Bukit Merah was allegedly poisoned to death.
A passerby found the cat’s lifeless body at Block 106 Jalan Bukit Merah on 11 June, and alerted Stomp to the incident.
She believes that the cat was poisoned and fears for the other cats in the area.
“Please broadcast this message,” she said.
“There are a few stray cats there and we worry that other cats may have been fed with poisoned food too.
“This heartless incident calls for an investigation.”

SPCA Responds
In response to the incident, SPCA’s executive director Dr Jaipal Singh Gill said: “The SPCA rescued the cat after being alerted to its condition by a concerned member of the public.”
Unfortunately, the cat passed away despite receiving medical treatment.
Now, the SPCA is urging the public to come forward with any helpful information.
“We are seeking information about the circumstances leading to the condition of the cat”, Dr Jaipal said.

The Operator of Platinium Dogs Club Charged With Animal Abuse
In other news, the operator of pet hotel Platinium Dogs Club was charged on Monday (15 June) with animal abuse and other offences involving 10 dogs.
The owner, 31-year-old Charlotte Liew, failed to provide dogs under her care with food and water and didn’t bring them to the veterinarian when they were injured or malnourished.
One dog, a Jack Russell terrier, named QQ, ended up dying because it was fed the wrong diet.
Moreover, after a shetland sheepdog had died under her care, she engaged a pet cremation service provider to cremate the dog to prevent investigators from finding out the cause of death.
Yes, she sounds like a horrible human being. Sadly, there are many others like her, and it may be getting worse during the Covid-19 outbreak.
Animal Abuse Increasing During Covid-19 Pandemic
According to The Science Times, reports indicate that animal abuse is on the rise during the coronavirus pandemic.
Some owners have abandoned their pets due to a fear that their pets may contract the virus, and others who have lost their jobs during the outbreak have ”deemed themselves incapable of taking good care of their pets”, reported The Science Times.
There’s no evidence, however, that pets can transmit the coronavirus to humans. And while Covid-19 has been tough on us, think of how hard it’ll be for those poor animals to survive on the streets after spending their lives indoors?
While it’s important to stamp out animal abuse in our communities, we also need to ensure that we’re taking care of the animals in our homes.
