Dietician Advises Max Of 2 Cups Of Bubble Tea Per Month To Avoid Diabetes & Obesity

PSA: the title reads MAX 2 cups PER MONTH.

Not MIN 2 cups PER DAY.

Because believe it or not… I actually read it as the latter and was internally screaming with joy for a brief moment.

Let’s face the facts. Majority of us are bubble tea addicts. The same majority might also realise that it’s an unhealthy addiction.

Some of us might be trying to cut down on our bubble tea intake. However, once you walk past one of those bubble tea stores, all hell breaks loose and you lose control.

As you sip on your milk tea, savouring the flavour while chewing on those brown sugar syrup coated tapioca pearls, you see your blood sugar and the number on your weighing scale going up.

But YOLO, right?

It is hard to suddenly go cold turkey.

But Lai, a Malaysian dietician recommends people to start slow by drinking as little as two cups a month.

Is that even poss-

400 To 600 Calories In Just That Cup Of Bubble Tea 

Lai mentions that a regular cup of bubble tea has approximately twenty teaspoons of sugar which equates to around 400 to 600 calories.

Just imagine eating 20 teaspoons of sugar every day.

To put that in perspective, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that the daily sugar intake for men and women should be nine and six teaspoons respectively.

That’s more than twice the amount of sugar in your drink.

Might Lead To Weight Gain 

I know, but still, I shall be the Captain Obvious you don’t need but still deserve: The increase in sugar intake will lead to higher chances of developing diseases such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Our bodies are not made to process all that sugar. The sugar will be turned into fat, thus causing weight gain.

Pearls Are Difficult To Digest 

Even the TCM uncles have something to say about the bubble tea craze.

According to Sin Chew Daily, a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner explained that the sticky and starchy tapioca pearls are hard to digest.

In addition, unless you’re that one friend who drinks warm bubble tea, most of us prefer our drinks iced. And because of that, too much of your iced cold bubble tea could cause gastrointestinal problems to develop.

(Wait, is warm bubble tea even a thing?)

Taking Baby Steps 

Desperate to cut down your intake? Start by limiting yourself to only two cups per month.

One cup can be for the start of the month and the other can be for the end.

Or you can treat yourself to a cup on your payday. The other cup can be reserved for a bad day.
