When Singaporeans were advised to defer all non-essential travel abroad due to the Covid-19 pandemic, some Singaporeans were like oh, only non-essential? Well, it’s definitely essential for me to have some Pad Thai in my stomach.
And when the government updated its travel advisory and asked citizens to defer all travel, some Singaporeans were like oh, but they only advised us right? So we can still go.
The point here is that humans are willing to do things that endanger others, as long as it serves their own selfish purposes.
Elderly Who Asked Food Delivery Riders Not to Smoke Allegedly Punched by the Riders
An elderly man was allegedly assaulted by two food delivery riders at Tiong Bahru Park on Monday morning (30 Mar).
Why?
Because the man asked the two riders to stop smoking at the park.
“He was kicked and punched by a female GrabFood delivery rider and a Foodpanda delivery guy after requesting them to stop smoking in the park as there were many elderly people exercising there,” one witness told Stomp.
The man sustained some injuries as a result; he had a cut on his left eyebrow and a bandage around his knee.
How could they do that to this poor old man?
According to Stomp, the police said they were alerted to a case of affray involving two men and a woman, aged between 24 and 67, at 1 Henderson Road at 6.19am.
The witness later posted a video of police officers talking to the two riders online.
Investigations are ongoing.
Smoking is not allowed at parks
Now, while assaulting someone is generally never a good method of conflict resolution, what is especially infuriating about this is that the old man was just trying to protect his fellow Singaporeans.
As the witness said, many elderly people were exercising there, and with the elderly already being vulnerable to the Covid-19 disease, this could increase their risk of severe complications if they were to contract it.
Plus, smoking in parks and reservoirs has been banned since June 2016, and for good reason.
Many people exercise at parks, and if you just ran 5km but inhaled secondhand smoke the whole time, then that kind of defeats the purpose.
Try sparing a thought for others, dear Singaporeans. And if you get caught doing something wrong, resist the impulse to punch them in the face.
It never really works out well for anyone in the end.
