If you’ve been on Netflix lately, you’ve probably caught a glimpse or two of Dynasty Warriors, a 2021 historical fantasy-action film.

Originated from a video game
That’s right, the film is actually based on a Japanese video game franchise of the same title by Koei Tecmo.
HMV Digital China’s executive chairman Stephen Shiu Jr. shared back in 2017 that he had approached Koei Tecmo and acquired the rights to make the Dynasty Warriors franchise into a movie.
It must be really exciting for fans of the video game to see it being adapted onto the big screen.
Cast
The film is directed by Roy Chow. Cast members are from Hong Kong, China and Taiwan, including Louis Koo, Carina Lau, Wang Kai, Tony Yang, Han Geung, Justin Cheung, Gulnazar and Ray Lui.
Synopsis
Although the film appears to resemble the recent games in the franchise, the plot of the show is more closely aligned with the 14th-century novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms was actually the original inspiration behind the games as well.
The film basically revolves around fearsome battles between warlords, warriors and statesmen all fighting for dominance with lots of special effects.
Release date
The film first premiered in Hong Kong on 29 April. It then premiered in Mainland China one day later on 30 April.
It was then released for streaming on Netflix on 1 July.
Shooting locations
The film was shot in mainland China and New Zealand. Scenes of royal palaces, villages and court corridors were filmed in mainland China.
After shooting in mainland China for 63 days, director Roy Chow announced that the team would be travelling to New Zealand to film background scenes amid the backdrop of snow-capped mountains, which provided a magnificent setting to the action-packed sequences.
Cast member sustained an eye injury during filming
In the middle of shooting, Louis Koo had sustained an eye injury. Despite this, he insisted on staying until the end for filming.
However, director Roy Chow refused to allow him to stay and sent him back to Hong Kong to receive medical treatment.
Koo rushed back to New Zealand as soon as he recovered to resume filming, and Director Chow commended the actor for his professionalism and dedication to his work.
