Gen-Z Said Only Old People Listen to Jay Chou, Sparking a Discussion

Do you know who Jay Chou is?

As the King of Mandopop hailing from Taiwan, it is practically impossible not to know the name Jay Chou.

But could Jay Chou ever be relegated as a “thing of the past” for older people to enjoy?

It appears that one youngster belonging to the Generation Z group thinks that Jay Chou’s music is for old people.

Of course, much discussion ensued.

Here is what happened.

One Gen-Z Person Thinks That Jay Chou Is for Old People

Earlier this week, on Thursday (27 July 2023), a netizen took to PTT to complain about a guest’s attitude towards Jay Chou’s music.

For those unaware, PTT is a social media platform popular in Taiwan, similar to Reddit.

The netizen shared on the PTT platform that a Jay Chou song was played in the shop where the OP (original poster) was working.

This sparked a comment from a female staff that the OP is like an “old person” for listening to Jay Chou’s songs.

The female staff was born in 2003, falling squarely into the Gen-Z gang.

Riled up by the female staff’s comment, the OP asked her who she usually listens to.

The female staff responded that she usually listens to K-pop groups such as New Jeans and BTS.

The OP ends the post by asking if it is “outdated” or “old fashioned” to listen to Jay Chou.

Well, we would say that Jay Chou’s music is classic though he has been around in the entertainment industry for some time now.

In fact, Jay Chou’s first album, titled Jay, was released on 7 November 2000.

Since it was before the female staff mentioned in the post was born, no wonder she thinks that only “old people” listen to his music.

What’s your take on this?

Of course, the OP’s post sparked much discussion.

Some of the comments said that it was indeed only old people who listened to Jay Chou’s music.

Though, of course, these could be comments made in jest instead of expressing their true feelings.

Other netizens thought that Jay Chou’s music was not necessarily confined to old people, as they still hear his music while walking on the street.

There were also netizens who offered names of singers who predated Jay Chou, such as Deng Li Jun (aka Teresa Teng, a Taiwanese singer who was active before she died in 1995).
