My apologies for releasing the earworm that’s about to burrow into your head and make a home there for the next few days, but this song has suddenly become just as relevant as it was when first released in 2002.
“We Will Get There” was originally released as the theme song for the National Day Parade that year, and admittedly, is one of the better ones, perhaps rivalled only by Kit Chan’s “Home”.
It touches the part of our hearts that belongs to Singapore, and never fails to draw some tears.
Well until 2021, that is.
Gov.sg Releases a Heartwarming Song About COVID-19 Fight
Last Saturday (13 Nov), gov.sg, the official website of the Singapore government, shared a music video on its YouTube channel titled “Together, We Will Get There”.
The song is the very same heartwarming tune sung by Stefanie Sun back in 2002, with the same lyrics as well. This time it was sung by local stars Aisyah Azizm, Alfred Sim, Joanna Dong and Shabir.
The video depicts frontline workers as they go about their day amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Inspired by real stories, the music video shows their struggles and how they deal with them.
“It has been close to 2 years. The journey hasn’t been easy, but together, we will get there,” gov.sg said in its description box.
The aim, presumably, was to instil a sense of togetherness and perseverance as we aim to get to a world free from coronavirus-related grievances.
But people didn’t exactly respond in the way that the authorities had anticipated.
Negative Reception
While there were some who liked the video and praised its message, others weren’t impressed.
You wouldn’t even need to scroll down to see the negative reception, as the dislike bar was a clear indication:
Scroll down further and you’d see comments like:
- “Together, We Will Get to Nowhere”
- “this song is just as useful as clapping for our frontline workers”
- “Get where? Timbaktu???”
Some went a little further, calling it “propaganda”.
There were a couple of positive reactions, though, where commenters expressed their gratitude for frontline workers and the good work that they do. Others found the negative reaction puzzling.
“What’s up with the hate? It’s a good video, that boosts morale. Keep it up SG government. You’re doing good,” they said.
