The Star Awards have descended upon us once more.

Who’s Missing from the List?

As mentioned in the headline, Jeffrey Xu, Ian Fang, and Shane Pow are noticeably absent from the list.

For the three individuals mentioned, they are part of a group called the 8 Duke of Caldecott Hill, a term referring to promising and upcoming MediaCorp actors from Singapore in the 2010s.

To be missing from the list might be a tad awkward for them, since they haven’t exactly met the expectations that their celebrity agency thrusted upon them.

Apart from the trio, Bonnie Loo, who received her first Top 10 Award last year is also missing.

Perhaps they were overtaken by the fresher faces like Chantalle Ng, Hong Ling and Xu Bin.

Two Notable Mentions

Among the male artiste line-up, there is a surprising face appearing in the popularity list for the first time.

It’s veteran actor Brandon Wong, who has just earned his first nomination after more than two decades of acting in local dramas.

“I feel like a mature woman who’s finally pregnant after many attempts,” the 50-year-old actor jokes, “At this age, it’s a high-risk pregnancy. Can I deliver a healthy baby? It’s up to the audience.”

Nonetheless, it’s a pivotal and emotional moment for him in his long career as Wong added, “Every year, my kids ask me, ‘Why aren’t you nominated, daddy?’ and I don’t know what to say to them. This year, I can finally tell my three precious kids, ‘Daddy finally got a nomination. You can feel a bit proud of me.’”

That’s honestly adorable, and Wong deserves it after all the blood, sweat, and tears he has poured into his career.

Another artist that was surprised by her own nomination was Cynthia Koh, though she took it in her stride as she light-heartedly made fun of the daring dress she wore last year.

A post shared by Cynthia Koh (@cynthiakoh27)

She jokes that the blue dress she donned “must have been memorable”, and even goes as far as saying that “maybe I’ll wear nothing” if she manages to snap up an award.

Those aren’t the assets the Star Awards are looking for… But you do you.

For Koh, she has only received two Top 10 awards in her long career.

Milestones for Others

Of course, the celebrities who have managed to sustain their popularity throughout the years rightly deserve a mention.

For Top 10 nominees Felicia Chin, Rebecca Lim, and Pornsak, it’s a critical year for them as they all have nine trophies to their names.

If they manage to bag their tenth trophy this year, they will qualify for the All-Time Favourite Artiste Honour next year.

Receiving that critically acclaimed award this year are Dennis Chew and Zheng Geping, who took home their 10th Top 10 trophies last year.

Congratulations to Dennis Chew and Zheng Geping, and may the odds be in the favour of the other three!

Newly Launched MY PICK! Awards

In an attempt to garner more viewership and audience participation, the Star Awards have launched the MY PICK! Awards that will take place exclusively during the show’s Backstage Live segment.

It feels like a Teens’ Choice Award because it has categories like:

  • Favourite Couple Pairing
  • Male Show Stealer
  • Female Show Stealer
  • Most Hated Villain
  • Perfect Combo
  • Most Attention-Seeking New Gen Host

Ummmm… I’m not so sure if the last award is even a compliment?
