Donald Trump has handled the Covid-19 pandemic in the US as well as Singaporeans have been handling life without McDonald’s and bubble tea.
That is to say, not very well.
Dismissing the advice of medical experts, denying past statements, leaving all responsibility to the states, and refusing to accept blame for his failures.
To call Trump’s response to the coronavirus outbreak a failure would be a massive understatement.
While his employees and even some medical experts under his charge have been hesitant to criticise him, one man who used to live in the White House has some rather harsh words for the world’s most orange leader.
Leaked Call Reveals Obama Calling Trump’s Handling of COVID-19 a ‘Chaotic Disaster’
Former President Barack Obama has slammed Trump’s handling of the Covid-19 outbreak, calling it an “absolute chaotic disaster.”
He didn’t tweet his frustrations like Trump often does, of course. His harsh words were heard in a leaked call with former members of his administration.
“It would have been bad even with the best of governments. It has been an absolute chaotic disaster when that mindset – of ‘what’s in it for me’ and ‘to heck with everybody else’ – when that mindset is operationalised in our government,” Obama said.
But has Trump’s response to the pandemic really been that bad?
In a word, yes.

Early in January, Trump ignored experts’ warnings on Covid-19 when the virus first started spreading globally and dismissed the threat of it affecting the US.
“We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.” – Trump, 22 Jan.
In March, when the number of infections started to soar, he completely contradicted his past statements on the matter, saying “I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic.”
In addition to suggesting the injection of bleach into the body to fight the coronavirus on live television, Trump has also left all 50 states to deal with the pandemic on their own, which even led to states bidding against each other for medical equipment.
But what’s more deplorable is his aggressive push to reopen the country for his own political benefit in the upcoming election, despite knowing the loss of life that will come with it.
“There’ll be more death,” Trump said. “The virus will pass, with or without a vaccine. And I think we’re doing very well on the vaccines but, with or without a vaccine, it’s going to pass, and we’re going to be back to normal.”
Supporting Joe Biden
According to The Straits Times, Obama can also be heard in the leaked call urging his former employees to join him in supporting Joe Biden as he prepares to take on Trump in the November presidential election.
“This election that’s coming up on every level is so important because what we’re going to be battling is not just a particular individual or a political party.”
“What we’re fighting against is these long-term trends in which being selfish, being tribal, being divided, and seeing others as an enemy – that has become a stronger impulse in American life,” Obama said”.
“It’s part of the reason why the response to this global crisis has been so anaemic and spotty”.
“That’s why, I, by the way, am going to be spending as much time as necessary and campaigning as hard as I can for Joe Biden,” the former president said.
With over 1,347,000 infections and 80,000 deaths in the US, you can see why so many are criticising the current US president.
Let’s just be thankful that our political leaders in Singapore don’t avoid responsibility like the plague and give dumb medical advice that not even uncles on WhatsApp would give.
