Local actress Ng Jingjing, whose real name is Ng Suan Loi, passed away on 5 April 2024 at age 88.
In a post on Ng’s Facebook page, presumably posted by a close family member, it says Ng Suan Loi passed away peacefully.
“She was a great mum who glued the family and extended family together. A fighter who knows what she wants and live life to the fullest.”
Ng’s 68-year-old older daughter Ke Pinfeng (transliteration) told Shin Min Daily News that her mother had a minor spinal surgery recently and was initially recuperating well.
Ms Ke said Ng even travelled to Malaysia for four days last month. Ng was said to have enjoyed the family gathering overseas and did not seem to be having any health problems.
On the night of 4 April, her domestic helper told the family that Ng was suffering from severe asthma. Even though she took medicine three times, she was still having breathing difficulties.
Ng was then sent to the hospital with heart palpitations and a high fever, then spent one night in the Emergency Department while conscious.
Her condition worsened the next afternoon, causing her to be sent to the Intensive Care Unit. There, she passed away peacefully that night, surrounded by family.
Ng Jingjing’s wake commenced the following day on 6 April 2024. The cortège leaving is set for 10 April 2024 at 4pm, and the cremation will occur at Mandai Crematorium Hall 1 at 5pm.
Ng Suan Loi Only Started Acting At 60
Ng Suan Loi, affectionately known as Jing Jing Ah Ma, entered the show biz at age 60, playing the role of Jerry and Tom’s grandmother and the mother of Steven and mother-in-law for Karen in I Not Stupid Too (2006).
Unfortunately, acting was a childhood dream that Ng Jingjing was not able to pursue when she was younger.
She grew up in Malaysia and started working in a rubber plantation at the age of six to earn pocket money. After marrying a Singaporean at 19, she relocated here.
Putting her acting dream aside, she worked hard as a seamstress to support her family, especially when her husband lost his job.
At one point, Ng also worked as a hawker selling fried banana fritters.
When her children had grown up and had their own families, Ng Jingjing decided it was time to take a bold step and return to her childhood dream.
She signed up for an acting class in 2006 and entered the showbiz that year, making her debut in I Not Stupid Too.
Ms Ke said even though Ng started acting at 60, she was a committed actor, and insisted on working even when she was feeling unwell.
Ng Jingjing is the perfect example that it is never too late to pursue one’s dreams and live life to the fullest.
Ng Suan Loi Is A Recognisable Face
Ng is no stranger to the silver screen, having acted in several of local director Jack Neo’s movies such as Long Long Time Ago (2016) and the aforementioned I Not Stupid Too. Ng Jingjing also played a supporting role in Boris Boo’s Filial Party (2014).
And, for those who don’t know, Ng Suan Loi played Wang Lei’s on-screen wife! Despite the huge 25-year age gap between the two, Ng and Wang shared incredible chemistry as a bickering old couple in Long Long Time Ago.
Ng Jingjing has even been seen in several commercials, including for brands such as Fragrance Bak Kwa.
When you think blogshop, you probably think of Shop Lovet, Love, Bonito, Fayth, and other youthful brands.
What you probably didn’t expect is that Ng Jingjing ran her own blogshop!
Ng sold handmade batik clothes and bags on her online store – JingJing’s Kelantan Batik. Products sold ranged from $5 to $25.
Ng grew up in a village in Kelantan, Malaysia. Back then, children were rather poor during World War II.
Ng thus taught herself to stitch and sew by observing her aunt, who used to make batik clothes in her village.
After she realised that people had an eye for her creations, Ng started selling handmade batik items through word of mouth. Later on, her family members helped her launch her online store to reach a bigger audience.
Those who have purchased from JingJing’s Kelantan Batik now hold on to very unique one-of-a-kind handmade items that can’t be replicated.
You could say Ng Jingjing lives on through her beautiful batik items whose bright splashes of colour reflect her happy and energetic nature.
The JingJing’s Kelantan Batik store is now no longer on the web.
