MBS Woman Sentenced to 16 Weeks’ Jail for Not Wearing A Mask in Public Multiple Times

You may have recognised her by her moniker, the Badge Lady.

Alternatively, you could have seen the tagline ‘MBS Woman‘, and recalled her over-the-top antics.

Either way, Phoon Chiu Yoke, 54, has certainly left her ‘mark’ on Singapore.

Though like all things, it appears that her 30 seconds of fame have come to an end.

MBS Woman Sentenced to 16 Weeks’ Jail for Not Wearing A Mask in Public Multiple Times

Lest you’re unaware, it’s a crime to not wear your mask in public places.

“Isn’t that common knowledge?” you may wonder.

Well, it might not be so for everyone.

For those who are unaware, Phoon, who previously went viral when she was captured without her mask on camera, had failed to wear a mask on numerous occasions.

Initially charged in May 2020 for failing to wear a mask over her nose and mouth at Newton hawker centre, she failed to learn from her lesson and continued to violate the rule in ‘earnest’, even going so far as to berate a video-taking bystander.

In addition, Phoon had flouted her 14-day stay-home notice for 16 minutes, when she left her room in MBS between 8:07 p.m. and 8:23 p.m. on 28 June 2020.

She also failed to wear a mask at the Mandarin Orchard Singapore hotel, a period when she was out on bail. She was charged for this a month later, and her bail of $12,000 was retracted.

On 6 Sep 2021, Phoon admitted to her offences in court and was sentenced to 16 weeks’ jail.

For flouting rules under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act, first-time offenders can face an imprisonment term of up to six months, as well as a fine of up to $10,000.

Meanwhile, repeat offenders can face a jail term of up to a year, as well as a fine of up to $20,000.

It should also be noted that Phoon, also known as the Badge Lady, had represented herself instead of engaging a lawyer.

But then again, it could be because the initial fine, a composition fee, had stood at just $300.

She was even reportedly seen and photographed without a mask while walking to the States Courts and had only put on a mask after a security guard told her to do so.

And in court, she even tried to remove her mask before addressing the court. The judge had to tell her to keep her mask on.

And though her antics weren’t exactly praise-worthy, someone had also created a keychain of her.
