Yes, Malaysians get to watch the World Cup for free again, and if you try to access their free online live stream from Singapore, you’ll probably get blocked.
Just ask those who tried in 2018.
RTM As Official Broadcaster, Cost of RM32.5 Million
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Minister Annuar Musa announced that the World Cup will be broadcasted for free by Radio Television Malaysia (RTM).
A total of 41 matches will be broadcasted, including 27 live matches and 14 delayed ones from 20 November to 18 December. The final match will be broadcasted live.
Minister Annuar shared that RTM is bearing a cost of RM32.5 million, or SGD$10 million, to allow Malaysians to watch the World Cup at zero cost. He has urged private and government-affiliated companies to help bear the costs.
Sorry Singaporeans, You Don’t Get To Be A Leech
RTM has been consistently bidding for the right to broadcast the World Cup, which takes place every four years.
Malaysians also got to watch the World Cup for free in 2018, but when Singaporeans tried to access their free online live stream, it was blocked.
This will probably be the same situation this year, so to everyone who was going to leech off Malaysia’s free broadcast… you’re out of luck.
And before you ask why Singapore isn’t broadcasting it for free: it was said that the costs of doing so in Singapore would be “prohibitively high”. The Government will have to bear the cost, and pass it down to us taxpayers.
To all Singaporean football fans, perhaps a road trip to Malaysia for the finals would be a good idea?
