Of The 942 COVID-19 Cases Today (18 Apr), 893 Of Them Live in Dormitories

Today, we’ve a record high of 942 new COVID-19 cases, which means we officially have more cases than Malaysia.

Out of the 942 cases, 893 are work permit holders residing in dormitories.

Here’s today’s announcement.

Of The 942 COVID-19 Cases Today, 893 Of Them Live in Dormitories

Out of the 942 cases, 22 of them are local community cases, with 14 of them Singaporeans or Singapore PR, 6 of them holding Work Passes, 1 holding a Dependent’s Pass and 1 with a Long-Term Visit Pass.

Based on the figures, the average number of new community cases has decreased: it was an average of 40 new cases per day in the week before, and it’s an average of 31 new cases per day in the past week. However, the average number of unlinked cases has increased from 19 per day in the week before to 22 per day in the past week.

As mentioned yesterday, MOH indicated that this is worrying; in addition, when they “randomly” tested a small sample of people, they also found new cases, which indicates that there might be undetected cases in the community.

Which is why they would “continue to monitor the numbers carefully as the circuit breaker period continue.”

There are also 27 Work Permit Holders who reside outside of dormitories who are tested positive.

893 of the new cases reside in dormitories as the authorities actively test and isolate them. Thankfully, most of these cases are young and so have a mild illness and are being monitored in the community isolation facilities or general ward of our hospitals, with none of them in ICU.

With this large number, and a contract tracing that suggests that transmissions at common construction work sites may have contributed to the increase in numbers, the MOM has made a drastic approach to issue a 14-day Stay-Home Notice for all work permit and S Pass holders in the construction industry, which will take effect from 20 April.

This is also a patient from the healthcare sector today: a 28-year-old Indian national who works as a housekeeper in Singapore General Hospital.

1 COVID-19 Patient Passed Away But Not Due to COVID-19

A 40-year-old Malaysian, who was confirmed to have the coronavirus yesterday, passed away today.

However, his death is unrelated to COVID-19 infection as the cause of death is acute myocardial infarction with cardiogenic shock—or in non-medical term, a heart attack.

Updates on Confirmed Cases

As of today, we now have 5,992 confirmed cases.

740 have fully recovered and are discharged, while 23 are in ICU. 11 have passed away due to complications from COVID-19.

The conditions of the remaining patients are stable or improving. Of this group, 2,678 of them who are clinically well but still test positive for COVID-19 are isolated and cared for at community facilities.
