If you’ve read this in the middle of this year, I bet you’d buy a pair of scissors and prepare to learn how to cut your own hair, as whenever PM Lee addressed the nation during that time, you can only hear frowns and groans.
But with the number of new community cases at 0 daily for more than a week now, and with experts discussing about which COVID-19 vaccines to use and which countries to friendzone with, I bet you’ve no intention to head down to NTUC FairPrice to hoard the last few toilet rolls.
Still, PM Lee jokingly reminded us not to stock up on anything as he announced his speech:
Lest you can’t read:
It’s been some time since my last address on COVID-19. I will be doing it again tomorrow, to update everyone on the current situation and the outlook for next year. The Co-Chairs of the Ministerial Task Force will hold a press conference immediately after.
My speech will be livestreamed on my Facebook Page at 5pm on Monday, 14 December. You can also catch it live on Mediacorp TV channels and radio. Do tune in!
But please stay calm – no need to stock up on anything! – LHL
In case you’ve forgotten, whenever there’s a press conference after his speech, it wasn’t exactly goody news: for example, when he announced the circuit breaker and the extension of the circuit breaker, the task force then held a press conference after that.
But I’m betting all my assets that tomorrow’s speech isn’t going that direction.
A History of PM Lee’s Address to the Nation
On a typical year, apolitical people won’t even know when PM Lee has given a speech, but this year, even people who thought that Donald Trump is Singapore’s President would remember every PM Lee’s speech.
This year, PM Lee has addressed the nation a total of six times about COVID-19.
The first was back in February, when he told us to calm down and also wondered why people were hoarding toilet rolls.
In March, he went to the podium again, this time telling us that more measures might be imposed as the pandemic was spreading rapidly all over the world.
In April, we got to know that 2020 was going to be one of the worst years ever, as he told us about the Circuit Breaker and showed us the power of a magical cup.
A few days later, he spoke to seniors in a rather impromptu and informal video, urging them to stay at home.
Later that month, even before we had time to realise how bad 2020 would be, he announced the extension of the Circuit Breaker.
And finally, in June, he, together with a few ministers, spoke not about the election but about post-COVID-19 future.
So here’s the question we’ve for tomorrow’s speech: what would be the colour of his shirt?
