Quite a few of us were shocked that nearly 4,000 cases were reported on Tuesday (19 Oct), a jump of almost 1,500 from the previous day’s tally.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) said it would monitor whether this post-weekend surge was temporary, but we can now see that it’s not.
However, that’s not the number that caught people’s attention. 18 more COVID-19 cases succumbed to the virus yesterday, the most reported by the ministry in a single report so far.
18 COVID-19 Fatalities; 9 Fully Vaccinated
The 18 COVID-19 fatalities were 16 men and two women, aged 55 to 96 years. Eight of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, one was partially vaccinated, and nine were fully vaccinated.
17 of them had various underlying medical conditions, while one unvaccinated case had no known medical conditions.
With these 18 deaths, Singapore’s death toll now stands at 264.
3,862 New COVID-19 Cases
3,862 new COVID-19 cases were reported yesterday (20 Oct), comprising 3,221 infections in the community, 630 in migrant workers’ dormitories, and 11 imported cases.
This is a decrease of 132 from the previous day’s tally.
Among the local cases are 568 seniors above 60.
Senior Citizen Centre Among 4 Clusters Closely Monitored by MOH
A senior citizen centre has been added to the list of clusters being closely monitored by MOH. 21 people have been infected at AWWA Community Home for Senior Citizens, all of whom are residents.
39 more people at the Bukit Batok Home for the Aged have gotten infected as well, bringing the aged care home cluster to 92.
One new case each was also added to the clusters at MWS Christalite Methodist Home and Acacia Home. The Methodist home now has 115 infections in total, while the latter has 16.
1,718 COVID-19 Cases in Hospital; 67 in ICU
At the moment, there are 1,718 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
337 serious cases require oxygen supplementation and 67 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
In addition, there are 17,084 cases undergoing home recovery, 3,941 in community care facilities, and 887 are in COVID-19 treatment facilities.
Currently, 84% of our population has been fully vaccinated. 85% have received at least one dose.
Of those who have passed away over the last 28 days, 30.1% were fully vaccinated and 69.9% were unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.
COVID-19 Curbs Extended To 21 Nov
There was more bad news yesterday as the COVID-19 restrictions which were supposed to end on 24 Oct have been extended till 21 Nov.
MOH said there will be a review at the two-week mark.
“Unfortunately, given the continuing pressures on our healthcare system, more time is needed for the situation to stabilise,” it explained.
