Aside from looking stressed most of the time, we Singaporeans are always in a rush.
Whether it’s rushing to work for a meeting, travelling across the country to meet a client, or rushing back home to watch Squid Game all over again.
That’s why people have to physically compete for the chance to leave a bus or train during peak hours.
In this instance, however, it was the bus driver who seemed to be in a rush. Unfortunately for him, a passenger was hurt in the process.
Bus Captain Closes Door on Elderly Woman
Yesterday (11 Nov), a video of an elderly woman getting stuck between the closing doors of a bus was shared on social media.
Since it was posted on the Singapore Road Accidents Facebook page, it has been shared over 950 times. The incident is believed to have taken place at around 2:40pm on Tuesday (9 Nov) at Hougang Interchange.
The start of the video looks like an ordinary scene out of everyday life; people alighting from a bus.
Around four passengers of varying ages get off the bus at the interchange, before an elderly woman tries to do the same.
Presumably, due to her age, the woman has to walk a little slower and grab onto the handrail for support as she alights.
As she steps off the bus, she’s still holding onto the handrail and has her left leg inside the vehicle.
Despite this, the bus captain closes the doors, leaving the woman’s left leg and hand stuck in between and causing her to fall backwards into a gap between the bus and interchange platform.
A bus driver from the interchange then rushes to her aid, followed by the bus captain who closed the doors.
He presumably failed to conduct a proper check before shutting the doors.
SBS Taking Action
Strict disciplinary action has since been taken against him, according to Ms Tammy Tan, senior vice-president of corporate communications at SBS Transit.
“The actions of our bus captain are most unacceptable,” she said.
Fortunately, the elderly woman wasn’t seriously injured in the accident. She did receive outpatient treatment at a hospital, though.
SBS Transit said it’s in contact with the woman’s family to offer its assistance and wished her a speedy and complete recovery.
As for the driver, the company will now be monitoring his performance closely.
